Hello,
i'm evaluating Now SMS/MMS for our service which basically let the user sends a MMS with picture attached to the modem, we want then Now SMS/MMS to retrieve the MMS and picture and let us store them on our server. So i have 2 questions:
- how to do that with Now SMS/MMS ?
- which GSM/GPRS modem to use? I saw in some thread that it can't be done using a mobile phone, only GSM modem let the PC retrieve the MMS/Picture. Was just wandering if you could advice a modem model that works well (if possible USB).

Thanks,
Lionel

Hi Lionel,

A lot of customers seem to use the iTegno USB modems. I've never used one of these modems personally, but I see a lot of log files where customers are using these modems ... and so far, I haven't seen any problems.

For US customers, we generally recommend the Multitech GPRS/EDGE modems. (I did experince a strange problem with one installation last week using one of these modems, where we had to use the "Standard 33600 bps Modem" driver from Windows instead of the driver that ships with the modem in order to get the installation to work properly. I don't have an explanation as to why this was, but I mention this just in case you try a Multitech modem and experience problems.)

Both iTegno and Multitech modems are based upon the Wavecom chipset ... and both have USB models. Wavecom modems are also good, but difficult to source.

In Europe, we've recommended the Siemens MC35 Terminal for quite some time ... it's a tried and true solution ... but it's getting a bit old these days. For MMS sending/retrieval, you'll definitely see performance enhancements with at least EDGE support, if not 3G/UMTS/WCDMA.

Nokia also has some external modems which I've seen used in a few installations, without any problems.

PC cards are also an option if you're running on a laptop or blade server with PC card slots. (I don't recommend trying to use a PC card to PCI adapter, as drivers can sometimes be troublesome in these configurations.)

Sierra Wireless Aircards tend to be the fastest performers.

SonyEricsson PC card modems also work well, but note that you may need to configure some of the supplied SE software not to autoload (otherwise the SE software will grab received received SMS messages instead of NowSMS).

Several Nokia PC card modems do not support receiving SMS (and therefore MMS) via a standard interface, and are therefore not recommended.

Historically, we've seen a lot of unexplained problems with Novatel PC card modems, so I generally do not recommend them.
