We have a simple application that we are using to evaluate Ozeki and NowSMS but have got to the stage where we (me) are tearing our hair out.

Our system set up is a windows XP laptop, a website (running on our ISP's machine) and 2 Motorola L6 phones using Vodafone UK Pay as you go. Plenty of credit on both phones.

We want to receive an MMS picture message from a user phone on one of our phones and depending on the picture send a particular SMS back to that user on the other of our phones. That should not be complicated should it?

The 'process incoming data and send SMS' bit of our system is working as we have made a pre-prototype that took pictures from a file on the laptop. The problem is receiving MMS data via these phones.

I test the incoming MMS phone (standard phone over Bluetooth link) and it reports OK

When I go to MMS settings I use the Vodafone defaults as selected by lookup operator settings.

As per Vodafone's site I use 'Wap' and 'Wap' as the login name and password.

When I send an MMS to the receiving phone It definitely gets it. The Incoming message' appears on the phone screen, the GPRS symbol comes on, I am told somewhere around 12K of data is transferred. The message is never stored on the phone.

Our desire is to transfer the data to MMS-IN but nothing has ever appeared there. The data is not on the phone.

The phones work Ok as I have sent and received MMS messages from them when using them without NowSMS.

It is further clear that NOWSMS receives some info as If I implement a 2 way SMS command that sends echo back - I get a response (presumably because the initial part of an MMS is to send a special SMS to the handset but nothing of the image arrives on the laptop (and I have searched the drives for new files just to make sure it was not going anywhere else).

So just to stop me having a mini-nervous breakdown can anyone advise me as to what I am doing wrong here. I attach the MMS and SMS Debug files.

My needs are so simple, I want to get a picture onto my laptop and send it to an ASP script on the website.

I attach the MMSDebug and SMSDebug files for info.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

The short answer is that you cannot receive MMS messages using a phone as a GSM modem. The MMS client in the mobile phone will consistently intercept the MMS notification messages, and prevent them from being forwarded over the GSM modem interface.

The only way that you can make this work is with a dedicated GSM modem device (e.g., Multitech, Wavecom, Sierra Wireless, etc.).

Dear Bryce,

Thanks very much for this. At least I know to stop this approach now.

Are there cards NOWSMS is compatible with or frequently used?

I'd rather buy one of those than take a punt on an unknown one.

FInally it may be helpful to note for other users, developing apps for PAYG Vodafone that they have a different APN address than contract phones.

For PAYG the APN is pp.vodafone.co.uk
