Hi Smithy,

Short numbers need to be registered with the mobile operators. So you'd need to get an SMS account setup with one of the operators, or better yet an aggegator that supports short codes.

Note that getting a short code for receiving messages will be more expensive than receiving on a standard type of phone number.

You can receive messages on a standard phone number with a GSM modem. A GSM modem (such as the Siemens MC35) is a specialised type of modem that accepts a SIM card and operates on the mobile network like a mobile phone does. Quite a few GSM phones have inbuilt modem capabilities that allow the phone to be used as a GSM modem with an appropriate cable (or often an infrared or bluetooth connection).

Whether you're using a connection to an SMS service provider, or a GSM modem, or a combination, the NowSMS software allows you to define an HTTP command that is executed when an SMS message is received. Your HTTP script can reply back with a message that is routed back out either through the GSM modem or a service provider. (Many people use a combination approach, where GSM modems are used for receiving, but outbound messages are sent through service providers.)

The following links discuss the NowSMS interface for processing received messages:
