Hi,

We are using NowSMS 60 days trial version and are planning to upgrade soon.
We had initially configured it to work with a Sony Ericsson K750i cellphone. We were able to send SMS/MMS (MMS Sent through operator MMSC)on it without any problems.
Now we have got a Wavecom GSM Modem and are having problem configure it.We have successfully added the modem in the SMSC. On clicking on the test button the message Initialized Modem at 9600 bps pops up and Modem Successfully Tested. However at the MMS Routing tab, the network connection says Unknown Modem and Modem Used COM1 and on clicking Test Connection it says \b {Modem is not responding to GPRS commands. Testing will continue} and then Connection Failed RAS Error 692 There was a hardware failure in the modem

Kindly let us know what the issue might be.
Thanks

Hi,

In order to send/receive MMS, you need to have a Windows modem driver defined for the modem.

If the manufacturer doesn't provide one, then you can manually add the "Standard 33600 bps Modem" driver via "Phone and Modem Options" in the Windows Control Panel.

Once you define that modem driver, change the modem definition in the "SMSC" list to use the named modem driver instead of COM1. (This will help you avoid some confusion.)

The only thing that concerns me is that it is very odd for NowSMS to pop up a dialog saying "Intialized Modem at 9600 bps". That means that NowSMS tried a lot of higher speeds, and that it couldn't get proper responses back until it slowed things down to 9600 bps. That's not necessarily a problem, but that is a very slow speed for modern modems, especially ones that support GPRS.

The "Modem is not responding to GPRS commands" error is also very suspicious. You might want to connect to the modem using HyperTerminal and issue the following commands:

AT+CGDCONT?
AT+CGDCONT=?

If you get an error response to either of those commands, then that is a problem.

Very early Wavecom GPRS modems did not support all of the AT commands required to actually support a GPRS connection to a named APN. Supposedly a firmware update was available for those modems. But it's been several years since I've seen one of those affected modems. Is this a newly purchased modem that you are trying, or is this an old one that was lying around somewhere? (I'm not pointing any fingers ... justthat from a troubleshooting perspective, it could make a big difference.)

Hi Bryce,
Thanks a lot for replying.

I had added the modem driver manually and on the list of the modem it displays Unknows Modem connected to COM1. As suggested by you, when I try adding the modem by the driver and try Test and Add modem, it displays an error message which says Unable to Access modem at COM1 Access is denied Another application is already using the device and then Unable to access modem, ensure that it is powered on and passes diagnostics tests.

It was sending SMS fine when we had added by COM1. I had checked it with Query Modem windows was able to communicate with the modem. Can you tell me what the issue might be ?

First, you should delete the modem at com1 in the SMSC.
Second, add the Standard 33600 bps Modem.
