Hi Bryce, I am using Benq M-32 GPRS Modem & sucessfully connected with SMS services. Now I am trying to connect MMSC but in the test connection of MMS, it is giving "Connection Failed" The settings that I used is: MMS server url: http://mms/servlets/mms wap gateway ip address: 10.12.0.30 GPRS APN: mms username: mms Password: mms Can you please advice me? Is the Problem with the Modem?? or Is the Operator[Etisalat, UAE] is supporting MMSC Operations?? Thanks in advance.. | |||

Hi Anto, Does it report a particular "RAS Error" code number? Or does it just say "Connection Failed"? It basically means that the GPRS connection is failing ... unable to connect to the specified APN. The first thing I usually suggest in this instance is to try the SIM card in a phone and make sure that it works in the phone for sending/receiving MMS. The reason I suggest this is because if you activated the SIM card for use with a modem ... most mobile operators assume that your intent is to use the modem for internet access. So they don't necessarily enable functions like MMS for your account. A quick test of the SIM card in a phone will rule out whether or not it is an acocunt issue like this. Other "Connection Failed" errors usually mean that there is a problem with the APN name, or a username/password for the APN issue. But your settings look correct for your operator. Usually, I ask that you enable the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG on the "Serial #" page of the configuration dialog. Then try your connection again and post the content of the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG. I'd suggest this MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG as a next step. However, if you are more technically inclined, here are some other tests that might be interesting. Make sure the NowSMS services are not running, and connect to the modem using HyperTerminal. Issue the following command: AT+CGDCONT? You should see a response something like this: +CGDCONT: 1,"IP","mms" If you don't see this response, try the following commands: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms" You should get back an OK. ATD*99***1# This command tries to initiate a GPRS connection. You should see "CONNECT" followed by some garbage if the connection is ok ... or "NO CARRIER" if the connection fails. If you get "NO CARRIER" then for some reason the modem is not making the connection (maybe it's a signal strength issue?) While we're talking about AT commands, some times if you have been trying a modem with different carriers, some modems can get confused if there are too many access points configured in the modem. When you issue the command: AT+CGDCONT? And you get a response like this: +CGDCONT: 1,"IP","mms" There might be more than one APN defined ... with the "1" being a different numeric value in each entry returned. To clear the definitions, enter the following: AT+CGDCONT=1 AT+CGDCONT=2 ...etc... Clearing those definitions might make a difference (the next time you connect with NowSMS it will add the entry that you need). -bn | |||

I'm suspicious about the "0.0.0.0" in the +CGDCONT response. I saw this recently in another thread where someone was having problems connecting. This field is for requesting an IP address when making the GPRS connection. Some modems might indeed interpret "0.0.0.0" as NULL ... or assign any IP address. But I've tested a few modems that I have ... and if this "0.0.0.0" parameters is present in the configuration, my dial-up fails with RAS ERROR 777. If I remove the "0.0.0.0" from the configuration, then everything works properly. The question is ... where is this "0.0.0.0" coming from? In the other thread, I speculated that perhaps the user had configured it themselves in the "Extra Init Settings" for the modem under "Modems" in the "Phone and Modem Options" area of the Windows Control Panel. Could you check that? Maybe there is even some software program that you were trying that automatically added it. For now ... go back into HyperTerminal and issue the command AT+CGDCONT=1 to delete this definition. Then issue the command: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms" And then AT+CGDCONT? I want to see if the "0.0.0.0" comes back. If the "0.0.0.0" comes back ... issue AT+CGDCONT=1 again to delete the definition. Then, try this: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms","" And then AT+CGDCONT? Is the "0.0.0.0" still there? I basically want to see if we can get rid of the "0.0.0.0" ... as I don't know where it comes from, and I know that it causes problems on a few modems that I've tested on. If the "0.0.0.0" doesn't go away after all of this, then maybe that is how your modem specifies null for a server-assigned IP address. That's possible ... I'm just highly suspicious. Oh ... and one more question ... what is the error text associated with the connection failed in NowSMS? Does it say RAS Error 777? | |||

Hi Bryce, I connected with Sony Ericsson W550i & it works fine, there i find the settings for mms as AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms","0.0.0.0",0,0. So I issued the command to the Benq M32 GSM Modem using the Hyperterminal. I received the RAS Error 31 (1F). I thought the same mms settings will work for the GSM Modem. Error 31 (1F) from RasDial is defined in Windows as "General Failure". Maybe there is something strange about the modem. It looks like you are getting a GPRS connection, but the login/authentication is failing. Have you tried moving the SIM card from the modem to a phone, and verifying that the phone can send MMS using that SIM card? Beyond that, I'm puzzled. But here's something else that might give us a clue ... If you select "Connect To" from the "Programs" menu in Windows, you should see that NowSMS has created a connection profile in Windows for each modem that you have attempted with. The name of the connection is "NowSMS -" followed by the modem driver name. If it doesn't prompt for a username, password and phone number when you try to bring up the connection, select "Properties" / "Options" ... and make sure the checkboxes for "Prompt for name and password" and "Prompt for phone number" are enabled. For "user Name" and "Password", enter "mms". For "Dial" ... try "*99***1#" Does this work? If not, try "*99#" and see if that makes a difference. I expect that you're still going to be seeing an error, meaning that the authentication/login to the GPRS connection is failing. But I don't understand why this would be the case. | |||
