Hi,

I have a rather unusual test setup and wonder if it's possible and how.

I intend to send/receive SMS/MMS between a lab CDMA device with a phone on the Verizon Wireless CDMA network in the United States.
The simplified diagram is show below

Lab CDMA Device--------NowSMS1-------NowSMS2--------Verizon Wireless CDMA Network------Verizon Wireless Phone

NowSMS1 and NowSMS2 resides on the same PC.

Is it possible to
1. bridge NowSMS1 and NowSMS2 so that whatever SMS/MMS received on NowSMS1 will be forwarded to NowSMS2 and send to the CDMA phone on the Verizon Wireless network, and vice versa?

2. If I have 5 CDMA PC cards connected to PC, can I run multiple NowSMS instances where each is associated with a PC Card?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

We are not aware of any CDMA modem devices that actually support the receiving of MMS messages from a live operator network.

If you use a GSM modem, with a subscription to a GSM mobile operator, it would be possible to facilitate bi-directional MMS message exchange. MMS messages could be routed via the GSM modem to a CDMA based recipient using MMS internetworking facilities at the GSM mobile operator.

The reason for this limitation is that we have not seen any CDMA modem devices that support binary SMS reception. If you read the link on our web site regarding "How MMS Works" at http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm, you'll get an overview of how MMS works, and get a better idea of where binary SMS fits into the picture.

The CDMA modem devices that we have seen only support the sending and receiving of SMS messages in text format.

MMS messages can be sent via a CDMA modem by configuring a dial-up networking profile where the modem acquires an IP connection and then submits the MMS message to the mobile operator MMSC for processing. (Note: NowSMS creates the dial-up networking profile automatically for GSM modems ... it is more complicated for CDMA modems. You must create a dial-up networking profile in Windows which calls "#777" with the appropriate username and password. When creating this profile, make sure to configure in the TCP/IP settings part of the profile that "Use default gateway on remote network" is NOT checked ... by default it is checked. Configure an MM1 connection under "MMSC Routing" to use this dial-up networking connection ... note that you will have to supply the "MMS Server Address" as NowSMS does not have pre-configured settings for any CDMA operators.)

MMS messages, however, cannot be received via a CDMA modem, because the operator MMSC is going to initiate the MMS delivery process by sending an MMS notification via WAP push over SMS to the modem, and we have no way of retrieving this message from the modem.

So generally speaking, a GSM modem, and using the GSM operator's MMS internetworking facilities to reach a CDMA recipient would be the only way to accomplish bi-directional MMS.

Multiple instances of NowSMS are not supported on a single machine ... but a single instance of NowSMS can interface with multiple modems, and rules can be defined to process certain phone numbers via particular modems if desired.
