Hi Guys,

I have a question regarding MMSC blocking. I've read that a lot of operators have configured their MMS GPRS APN and WAP gateway in such a way that they only can download mms files from the Operators own MMSC IP's.

But isn't it so that an operator also needs to allow access to IP's from the MMSC's of all their roaming partners? When someone send a MMS from his Vodafone phone to an Orange subscriber it is the ORange phone that needs to download the MMS from the Vodafone MMSC servers. Am I right?

Do you think operators will be willing to sell us their IP-ranges for building our own MMSC and so that we can send real MMS to all roaming partners of this operator?

Hi,

Cross operator MMS could work like that ... but generally it does not.

If a Vodafone subscriber sends an MMS message to an Orange subscriber, it generally works like this:

Vodafone subscriber submits MMS message to Vodafone MMSC.

Vodafone MMSC transmits MMS message to Orange MMSC via MM4. (Alternatively, the Vodafone MMSC might connect to an interoperator service provider to transmit the message via MM4, and that service provider then connects to Orange over MM4.)

Orange MMSC delivers MMS message to recipient.

It's not unheard of to get access for delivering MMS messages to a specific operators' customers with your own MMSC. However, from what we have seen, it is extremely rare unless you are doing a project on behalf of said operator or have a very strong commercial partnership.
