Hi all, Am trying to do a test drive to the nowsms gateway but cannot pass the connection test under the properties tab (am trying to use the operator mmsc for now)

I am using a nokia 7210 for test purposes. Sending sms and wap push messages, as suggested in the nowsms documentation, all worked fine but when trying to test the mmsc routing connection to the operator (or sending an mms for that matter) the error I am getting on the phone is "Subscribe to GPRS first..."

Since I am able to send mms directly from the phone and have not subscribed to any GPRS service, I wonder if any of you had a similar issue. Thanks in advance for all your help/tips,

James
PS: Sorry I posted this message initially on the SMS forum

James,

You are able to send MMS directly from the phone, but without GPRS?

Most operators (and most Nokia phones) require you to use GPRS for connecting to the operator MMSC.

The operator MMSC connection setup in NowSMS assumes that you will be connecting over GPRS. In doing so, it dynamically creates a dial-up networking profile to establish a GPRS connection on demand.

If you need to use a non-GPRS connection, then you need to manually create a dial-up networking profile in Windows, and configure it to dial the appropriate access number. In the "Network Connection" field when defining a conection to the operator MMSC, you will should then select that profile name, which should be prefixed with "Dial-up:" in the list.

If you are indeed using GPRS, it is possible that NowSMS is having a problem setting the correct GPRS APN due to problems with the Windows modem driver for your device. (The error message displayed on the phone may then be generated because the device is trying to connect to this wrong GPRS APN.) We have noticed this particular problem most frequently with Bluetooth modem connections, but it can occur in a variety of other situations.

There is a patch version of NowSMS that can detect these types of modem driver problems, and repair the modem driver automatically. I am trying to get this patch uploaded to the web site today. When uploaded, it should be available under a link of http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms501-patch1.zip.

Note that when configuring an operator MMSC connection over GPRS, this version may prompt you that it needs to reboot the PC in order to repair a modem driver.

Many thanks for the quick reply Bryce. I believe the phone has the GPRS connection enabled because I am able to send an MMS directly from it. Also, and my low-tech acid test for this is to get close to an audio speaker while sending it (I can clearly hear the GPRS connection uploading the mms file and then a high burst indicating SMS communication via GSM)

As I looked for answers in the forum before posting this question, I did download the patch but still didn't get the mms sending to work.

One thing I would like to add is that the phone displays a window mentioning "Creating GPRS connection" before popping up the "Subscribe first" message.

As for the settings, I did check some of your comments in previous posts and many others inputs regarding settings and I believe they are correct.

Is SMSNOW generating any log file? Where can it be found?

Thanks in advance for the help Bryce.

Bryce, The patch that I installed was nowsms5-patch4a.zip. Is the one you mentioned included in this patch? Thanks,

James

Sorry for my last post Bryce. I've downloaded the patch and as you predicted the driver was updated and I had to reboot the system.

This is what's happening now: The GPRS connection is established (I can see a G on the upper left corner of the phone's screen) and presumably the MMS is being sent. 10 minutes on to the connection and nothing happens -- the "G" notation never disappears from the phone's screen meaning, I believe, the GPRS connection is never closed.

Since I'm just trying to send a small MMS (1k image file plus some "test" message) what do you think may be happening? Again, a log file would be great...

Many thanks,

James

Forgot to add that the connection test ends with a success message. What do you think is the reason for the GPRS connection to "hang" like this?

Thanks again,

James

Another test result: Tried to send a message to the phone I am using to connect via GPRS (loopback test) and it worked well - a few seconds after initialising the GPRS connection, the MMS arrived. No problems retrieving the test image/viewing the text.

However, when trying to send an MMS to another phone (ie, to a different MSISDN than the test phone is using) no MMS message arrives...

Also, the GPRS connection is not shutting down and at this point I am assuming this is deliberate to avoid any setup time for sending later MMS messages.

2 questions: Have you seen this issue before (loopback works, other MSISDNs no) and is it possible to tell the nowsms gateway to disconnect the GPRS link after an MMS is sent?

Thanks in advance Bryce,

James

James,

My sincere apologies for taking so long to get back to you. This past week was quite busy.

I can't think of any issues where the loopback works both other MSISDNs do not ... other than if the phones are on different carriers and there is no interoperability between the carriers.

Can you send an MMS message from the handset itself and successfully send it to the other phone number?

If you can send successfully from the handset, but not via NowSMS, go into the "MMS Routing" definition where you setup the MMS connection parameters. Make sure the "Default Sender Address" field is blank. And make sure that "Allow Sender Address Override" is unchecked.

Let's see if those settings make a difference.

If those settings don't make a difference, then let's collect a debug log on the MMS transaction. Create a file named MMSWAP.INI in the NowSMS subdirectory. Put the following content in that file:

[MMSWAP]
Debug=Yes

Restart the MMSC service. Try sending another MMS message ... send one to your own number, and one to the other number.

Collect the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG, put it in a ZIP, and e-mail it to nowsms@now.co.uk, or attach in a reply here.

As for the GPRS connection, I was about to tell you that this was not normal. But, as I analysed it a little more, it could be, depending on your configuration.

If the modem is defined on the "SMSC" list, and "Receive SMS Messages" is not enabled, then the GPRS connection would stay active until the gateway had an outbound SMS message to send.

This is to help alleviate unnecessary connection setup/teardown delays.

(However, if "Receive SMS Messages" is checked, after the MMS is sent, the connection is torn down, because NowSMS needs to re-establish connectivity to the modem to be able to receive SMS messages.)

Check your configuration. Try enabling "Receive SMS Messages" for the modem, and I expect then you will see the connection teardown.

Many thanks for your message Bryce.

I was indeed able to send an MMS to another phone number. The reason for the initial failure, however, is a mistery to me.
The options you mentioned: "Default Sender Address" was blank and "Allow Sender Address Override" was unchecked.

As for the GPRS, I have now tested sending an MMS with "Receive SMS Messages" checked and the "hang" issue was solved!

Many thanks again Bryce. Have a great weekend and if the original problem arises again, I will make sure to post you a log file as I have no clue what that issue was.

Regards,

James
