As 3g offer much better data rates than GPRS (in coverage areas) are there any plans to ad support for it for sending and receiving MMS ?

According to the leaflet I received about it it (like the aircard is supposed to) doesn't need to mode switch between SMS and IP connectivity.

Cheers

Hi Arne,

We had someone (I believe from the Netherlands) trying NowSMS with that card recently:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3722.html

They had some SMS issues, but it appears to be related to the fact that the operator did not support SMS over GPRS. They had to configure NowSMS to explicitly use SMS over GSM for sending messages.

If the device can support SMS and IP connectivity at the same time, then it would have a "network" driver installed for the device in Windows (instead of using dial-up networking to make a connection).

From a NowSMS perspective, we can be configured to route the MMS traffic over a specific network connection, or a specific modem. When you configure the MMS send or receive settings in NowSMS, we display a list of entries with different prefixes:

Modem: - These entries refer to specific modem devices attached to the PC. If you select one of these, NowSMS assumes that it is a GPRS modem, and expects to be able to send standard GPRS modem commands to activate/deactivate data connectivity.

Dial-up: These entries refer to "dial-up networking profiles" that are defined to Windows. Normally these are only used if you are using dial-up networking to interface with the MMSC. (A pretty rare scenario, but something we thought should be considered.)

Network: These entries are specific network card drivers. On a typical PC, you'll just see "Network: Local Area Connection" which is the default name for your network card or 802.11 wireless card. If you have multiple network cards installed, you can configure NowSMS to route the MMS traffic via a specific network card. Or it could also be a network driver associated with a PC card, such as the Sierra Wireless Aircard. Or it could even be a VPN to a carrier.

Basically, if the device looks like a network card, then we can interface with the network card independently from SMS access via the modem interface.

But if the device requires the use of dial-up networking services in order to make a network connection, then SMS access via the modem interface is not possible simultaneously.

One of the guys in our office is talking about getting one of the cards, so hopefully we'll have some other real-world feedback before too long.

Bryce,

Sorry for the delay in replying, yeah sending I don't see as a problem as from what I can tell it see its seen as a network device rather than a modem, it the SMS/MMS notification that I was concerned about. I'd be VERY interested in what experiences the "other guy in the office" has with it, esp if he can get it to do SMS reception while keeping the 3G connection

Cheers

Hi all. I was thinking about buying the LG 8110 on 3 mobile. I know that the companies always promote how well their coverage is, but I wanted to know what you guys thought. I dont want to spend any cash if there is no reception. Are you on 3M and what do you think? (I'm in the UK)

Sorry, I don't have any VB6 examples.

Basically, NowSMS can call a command line program or an HTTP script when it receives an SMS message. That is described here: http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/2_way_sms_support.htm

To submit SMS messages to NowSMS, you use HTTP: http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/sending_messages/sendin g_text_messages.htm

Receiving MMS messages is a bit more complex because an MMS message can contain more data. That is described here: http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/2_way_mms_support.htm

The various interfaces for sending MMS messages is found here: http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Submitting_MMS_Messages.htm

Introductory information on NowSMS can be found at the following link (explains pre-requisites about what you need to use NowSMS):
