Hello,
I've been using Now SMS for a bit now for receiving MMS's, and it's been incredibly stable. But downloading an image via MMS takes forever (especially with newer smartphones that send multiple MB pictures). I was wondering if there's any way to optimize the process, or if not what's the fastest GSM modem that you know works with Now SMS?
Thank you,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Generally speaking, if you're in an area with good 3G coverage, you want to be using a 3G modem instead of a GPRS/EDGE modem.

It makes no difference with SMS, but it can make a big difference with MMS.

We've discussed a few here: http://blog.nowsms.com/search/label/3G%20modem

That said, there are big differences in 3G speed depending on what your modem supports and what your mobile operator supports.

The core 3G UMTS protocol itself only does 384Kbps. It's a considerable improvement over GPRS (around 56Kbps in ideal environments) or EDGE (around 120Kbps in typical environments, just over 200Kbps in ideal environments) ... but it's far from blazing.

The other acronyms that you need to know about are HSPA, HSDPA and HSUPA.

HSPA, or High Speed Packet Access, is somewhat generic. It means that the modem supports HSDPA and/or HSUPA.

HSDPA is High Speed Downlink Packet Access, and this is the speed at which you can download data from the mobile operator network. This speed is important for receive MMS performance.

HSUPA is High Speed Uplink Packet Access, and this is the speed at which you can upload data to the mobile operator network. This speed is important for send MMS performance.

HSDPA support is more widely implemented than HSUPA.

You'll want to check to see what your provider supports ... check what frequency they use ... and then look back over the modems that I've referenced above.

If you are using a 3G modem, you might also want to reconfigure the NowSMS settings to use the WAP2/HTTP gateway for the MMSC instead of the default WAP/WSP gateway. (Let me know what operator you're using, and I can try to help find this information.)
