Hi,

Installed V5 and are trying to submit MMS via service provider's (Vodacom, SA) MMSC. I use a Nokia 6310i as a GPRS modem and have set everything up as per the documentation, i.e. the modem, dial-up configuration and MMSC routing. I can successfully connect to the SP by using the Windows dial-up connection. I've also set the default MMS route directly to the SP's MMSC, copying all setting from a working MMS phone. When I use the test function on the MMSC Routing tab, the modem connects to the SP but after a while I get a 'Cannot connect to WAP Gateway' error. I've made very sure I've got the right WAP Gateway IP Address. Any idea on why it can't see the WAP gateway. How is the test performed? Is the gateway pinged or what protocol is used to test the gateway setting?

Also, if I try and submit a MMS from the WEB interface, nowsms does not even attempt to connect to the SP via the GPRS modem. It says 'Message Submitted' but never dials out. Any idea on this?

Just noticed I cannot send SMS from the WEB interface either. When I do a TExt Message submit from the WEB Interface, an entry is wriiten into the debug.log file:

15:18:57:343 [2] ThreadProcessModem: Modem initialization complete: Nokia 6310i (Cable)
15:19:18:265 [5] ThreadProcessConnection: Processing connection from 127.0.0.1...

15:19:18:265 [5] ThreadProcessConnection: Processing request /Send%20Text%20Message.htm?PhoneNumber=0824413903&Text=test&InfoCharCounter=&PID =&Submit=Submit
15:19:18:281 [5] Debug: 1 recipient entries
15:19:18:281 [5] Debug: 0824413903

but the SMS never goes out.

The SMSC test on the modem passes, no problem.

More info...

If I stop the SMS Service and Start it again, I get a 'Error 1056 starting service' message.

How can I check if the service is working properly?

Tx!

Jannie,

Don't worry about the "1056" error. That error code means "Service already running".

We've had a couple of reports of that error with the new version, so I'm not sure what the situation is. (Are you running under Terminal Services by any chance?)

And now on to the more important bit ... the connection to the WAP gateway.

What are the settings that you are using for your mobile operator? Go ahead and post the GPRS APN, WAP Gateway IP and MMS Server URL.

When we test the connection, we actually attempt to connect to the gateway as a WAP client.

I'm guessing that the GPRS APN might not be getting properly set for the dial-up networking profile (are you using the AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","GPRS.APN" command in the modem setup)?

Let's enable the debug log for the WAP client. Create a file named MMSWAP.INI in the NowSMS program directory. Place the following content in that file:

[MMSWAP]
Debug=Yes

Repeat the "Test Connection", and there should be some content in a file named MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG. What is the content of that file?

Regarding the 2nd message about SMS messages not going out.

Go to the "SMSC" page of the configuration dialog. I'm assuming you only have the Nokia 6310i defined as your only SMSC connection. Highlight it and select "Properties". Make sure that "Support any outbound message traffic" is selected.

Follow-up on the error message "Error 1056 starting service".

That error message can be ignored.

When you click the "Start" button for the SMS service, the software tries to start the service twice, and on the second attempt an error is returned because the service is already running.

This can be ignored, it is not an actual problem.

Hi,

On the 'Can't send a SMS' issue:

I de-installed V5 and installed V4.2. Using the same modem setup I can send SMS's no problem. Re-installing V5, I once again can't send any SMS's. The modem tests OK from V5 and the SMSC setting is set for any outbound traffic. It's like the server is not running at all.

After submitting a SMS via the WEB, the following entries are in the debug.log file

19:58:50:093 [3] ThreadProcessModem: Modem initialization complete: Nokia 6310i (Cable)
19:59:16:250 [6] ThreadProcessConnection: Processing connection from 127.0.0.1...

Bryce,

On the 'Cannot connect to WAP Gateway':

I created the MMSWAP.INI and restrated the service. However, no log file is created.

The settings I'm using:

MMS AP: mms.vodacom.net
WAP IP: 196.6.128.6
server URL: http://mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za

I've installed the Nokia 6310i modem on my PC running XP. THe modem software has an option to enter the GPRS AP. Seems I have to enter the AP here (mms.vodacom.net) instead of using the init. string in the modem settings. If I do enter the modem string the dial-up connection won't even connect.

Jannie,

Alright ... there is definitely a problem with SMS messages not being routed out consistently. I just installed a fresh test installation here, and the SMS messages are just sitting in my "Q" subdirectory, and not being sent anywhere.

It looks like there is a bug in the beta release in this area.

You can work around the bug by doing the following:

On the "SMSC" page of the configuration dialog, highlight the modem definition, and press "Properties".

Enter "*" in the "Preferred SMSC Connection for", and press "Add". Press "OK", then "Apply". Restart the service, and it should then route the SMS messages outbound.

We'll definitely get this fixed in the next beta release as this is a rather large bug.

Jannie,

On the MMS issue, it looks like we're not getting any response from our WAP connection attempts.

I suspect the phone is connecting to the wrong APN.

This is probably related to the AT+CGDCONT command in the modem extra settings causing problems.

Try going into HyperTerminal. Connect to the COM port directly.

Hit Enter.

Enter ATZ ... and you should get an OK response.

Issue the command AT+CGDCONT? ... and it should list currently configured APNs.

Does the MMS APN appear anywhere in this list?

If yes, what is the number associated with that APN (listed immediately after the "CGDCONT:")?

You can change the phone number that you dial in the dial-up networking profile to be "*99***2#" (where 2 is this number) instead of "*99#".

If no, then what happens when you issue the command: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms.vodacom.net"?

Bryce,

The first time I entered: AT+CGDCONT?

I got: +CGDCONT: 1,"IP",,,0,0

I assume this is the 'active' setting on the 6310i. You can have various profiles defined but only one active. I've set it up on the phone as the MMS profile.

When I issued: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","mms.vodacom.net"

I got an OK

Subsequent AT+CGDCONT?

returned: +CGDCONT: 1,"IP","mms.vodacom.net",,0,0

Not to sure what to try next?

Ok.

It looks like initially there was no APN registered as CID 1.

CGDCONT=1 was returning a blank APN. After you issued that command it defined "mms.vodacom.net" as CID 1.

So I think now you should be fine. If you use the dial-up connection to call *99# ... it should connect you to the "mms.vodacom.net" APN now, whereas previously it was not.

I think we're going to have to plan to add another configuration setting for the APN so that we can issue this command directly.

Jannie,

Just FYI.

After seeing how much trouble people were having configuring the GPRS connections in "beta 1" of Now SMS/MMS v5.0, we decided to simplify the configuration.

In "beta 2" and later, you no longer have to manually define a "dial-up networking connection", or insert this "AT+CGDCONT" command into the Windows modem driver setup.

Now, you just tell us which modem you want to use, and which APN you want to connect to, and this process is automated.

The "beta 2" release of Now SMS/MMS Gateway v5.0 is currently available at http://www.nowsms.com/beta5.

Thanks for taking the time to work through the configuration issues as described in this dialog. It's feedback like this that gives us the push to make things better.

Cheers!

Bryce, Hi

Downloaded B2 and installed. Configured everything in the new GUI, but when I do the test, I still get the 'Cannot connect to Gateway' error. This is now with the direct connection to the GPRS phone and not through the dialup connection i created manually.

Two questions:

1) I see a new dial-up connection was created. (not by me) Does the nowsms gateway do this?

2) I use a Nokia 6310i phone as a GPRS modem. To do this, you need to install the Nokia modem option for the 6310i on the system running the gateway. This works fine and I can send and receive a SMS, no problem.

However, if I just use the modem with it's default configuration, the MMS Routing test portion won't even connect to the modem. In the software configuration of the modem there is a setting to enter the GPRS AP. Only if I enter the AP name here will the MMS test connect to the modem, but I still get the 'Cannot access Gateway' error.

I'm beginning to suspect the problem might be with the 6310i modem software?

Have you been able to test this configuration in another network, i.e. a 6310i as a GPRS modem sending MMS direct to the operator's MMSC?

Thanks for all the help, by the way.

Jannie

PS. Is it possible to move this thread to the Beta forum?

Jannie,

I don't have a 6310i ... but my understanding of the 6310i is that it has a hardware modem, so it shouldn't require any modem software actively running.

It does require a modem driver in order to be able to make a GPRS connection, but those are really just scripts that Windows runs to initialise the modem and interpret responses from the modem.

I'd like to see the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG again. There should be some info about the AT+CGDCONT command being issued, beyond what we saw in the "beta 1" log, and I'm curious what that shows.

The dial-up connection with NowSMS in its name is being created by NowSMS. I'd be curious if you can make that connection connect external to NowSMS. (The only issue is that based on the AT+CGDCONT command, we may change the phone number that is dialed. The default is *99#, but NowSMS includes the CID number when it dials automatically, *99***1#.)

I've been able to try this personally against 4 operator MMSCs ... O2, Vodafone and Orange in the UK, and T-Mobile in the US. I tried the above with a T68i for sending, and a Sierra Aircard 750 for sending and receiving. So far I haven't heard of any other connectivity problems. We did have problems in beta 1 connecting to the O2 UK WAP gateway, and we had problems with Orange because the dial-up connection required a user id and password ... but beta 2 sorted those issues.

Jannie,

I'm excited. That looks much better than before! There's definitely light at the end of the tunnel for getting your problem resolved.

The only problem now is that we are not successfully connecting to the WAP gateway ... but at least we are getting a response back from the WAP gateway. That tells us that we are actually talking to a WAP gateway.

It looks like we are getting a redirect response back from the WAP gateway, which is the same problem we were having with the O2 UK WAP gateway initially. Essentially, the gateway is telling us we need to connect to a WAP different gateway. In this case, a different port on the same machine, but we're not parsing the port # correctly, hence the looping.

I'm going to send you an updated version of MMSWAP.DLL which should correct this problem.

Hi,

The DLL worked! At least the test now passes. There's one thing about the default gateway, I'll pick up later with you.

However....

When I try and submit a MMS from the WEB interface I get:

Error: Unable to fetch URL:
http://127.0.0.1/20030801/12/3F2A3DAEa.MMS

If I use the Notfication option and use the above URL, I get the same message.

As the WEB server is running on port 8800, I used the Notification option and entered the URL as:

http://127.0.0.1:8800/20030801/12/3F2A3DAEa.MMS

I then get:

Error: Invalid Content Type for URL:
text/html

Am I missing something?

Testing the connection fails with "Unable to connect to WAP gateway". But because respond is comming from the WAP gateway I did not worry about that.

Balasz,

It looks like you need the same updated MMSWAP.DLL as Jannie. If the third byte of the response is "03" and the fifth byte starts with "C", then it is the same problem.

I will e-mail it to you, and I'm going to look at updating the "beta 2" download on our site to include this.

And for anyone else that might be experience the same problem, you can download http://www.nowsms.com/download/mmswap.zip for an updated version of MMSWAP.DLL that replaces the original verison included in the "beta 2" release.

Jannie,

I'll bet the MMSC service is not running, or its port number conflicts with another service.

It listens on its own HTTP port configured on the "MMSC" page of the configuration dialog.

That said, for your configuration, where the gateway is not acting as an MMSC, but instead forwarding everything over the MM1 connection to the operator MMSC ... it shouldn't even be trying to retrieve the URL from the MMSC.

I think you might have discovered another bug.

Go into the "MMSC Routing" page of the configuration dialog. Edit the defintion and put "*" under "Route messages to this account for recipient phone number(s)".

The SMSGW component is not picking up the "Default Route" configured on the "MMSC Routing" page, and is trying to perform direct delivery. Putting a "*" in that "MMSC Routing" entry will work around this problem.

Still, I think the MMSC service is not running, and that will need to be activated, as the MMSC handles outbound routing to other connections.

Hi,

I missed the MMSC running on port 80. Had another service on that port. Thought everything runs on 8800....

Changed the MMSC port to 81 and now can submit, with or without the '*'.

Now...

When I submit the MMS via the WEB interface, the SMS to the handset goes out (the handset comes up with 'Retrieving Message') and the GPRS icon on the phone comes on for a while. The message seems never to arrive at the handset.

The SMSOUT.LOG file has the following entry:
2003-08-01 19:51:46,3F2AA5E2.req,127.0.0.1,0824413903,OK -- Nokia 6310i (Cable),Binary=1;DCS=F5;UDH=0605040B8423F0;Data=8606226170706C69636174696F6E2F76 6E642E7761702E6D6D732D6D65737361676500AF848C82983346324141354531008D90967375626A 656374008A808E0221E088058103093A8083687474703A2F2F3132372E302E302E313A38312F3230 3033303830312F31392F3346324141354530612E4D4D5300

The MMSC.LOG file:
2003-08-01 19:51:30,MMSRETRIEVE,127.0.0.1,,,20030801/19/3F2AA5E0a.MMS,OK,8672

However, no MMS at the handset..

Any ideas?

On the Default Routing issue:

If I leave the Default Route on my LAN card on, the connection to the WAP gateway is attempted across the LAN interface (I believe) and I get the 'Cannot connect to gateway' error.

If I disable the LAN interface, the default route falls away and the MMS test now works fine.

When the nowsms gateway connect to the MMS AP, it receives a IP addr. in the 10.0.0.0 range from the network. As the WAP gateway is on another IP network, 196.6.128.0 in this case, the WAP requests is routed over the LAN if it is active.

The upshot of this is, I have to disable the LAN interface whenever I want to test the MMS capability. Not to sure how this can be fixed as it seems to be an IP routing issue.

I tried to enable the 'Default Route' option in the nowsms dial-up setup but it seems to default back to unchecked.

Jannie,

When the MMS goes out via SMS, then it is not being submitted through the operator MMSC. It is submitted in a way that the gateway is the MMSC. The notification goes out and tells the recipient to retrieve the message from the NowSMS gateway.

So if you're seeing that behavior, then that suggests that the MM1/GRPS connection is not setup as the "default route" on the "MMSC routing" page. (Actually, the bug that I mentioned is that the web interface ignores this "default route" setting, which is why you have to configure "*" in the route to make it the default at present.

So, anyway, the reason why the message is not retrieved, is because the phone cannot connect to the NowSMS server. It could be a configuration issue with the server ("MMSC local host name or IP address" configured for the PC is not accessible from the outside world), or it could be that the MMS APN at the operator does not allow access to external MMSCs, or the WAP gateway for the APN does not like content servers on ports other than 80. (Actually, in your above examples, I see that you have 127.0.0.1 configured as this address, so that is why the phone would not be able to retrieve the message.)

Since you want to submit your messages through the operator MMSC, I'd ignore all that, and just configure the "*" as the recipient address in the definition under "MMSC Routing".

On the other question, when we initiate the GPRS connection, we manipulate the IP routing table on the PC to explicitly route requests to the WAP gateway over that connection.

Are you sure there is a problem here? Try the "Test Connection" button a few times to verify.

If you still think there is a routing issue, we'll add some more debug to the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG file. Maybe there is something else that is working differently in your setup.

Just to confirm, we're definitely doing that. As you can imagine, having the default IP routing change on an active server would be a problem (clients could no longer connect to the web interface unless they were on the local network). So when we manage the GPRS connection, we make sure that the connection is initiated with this setting unchecked.

I'm going to send you an updated MMSWAP.DLL with some more debug.

Hi,

The IP settings on my LAN interface definitely affects the WAP connection. When the LAN port is active and I do a test, I get the 'Cannot connect to WAP gateway' error. When I check the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG, the WAP gateway never responds. Just the few attempts from the nowsms gateway to connect.

When I disable the LAN interface, the test goes through with bi-directional comms.

There could be two problems here:

1) The Default Route as I described before. With both interfaces up (LAN and GPRS modem), when I do an IPCONFIG on a DOS prompt, I only get one IP gateway and it points to my LAN card. Thus if you use the IP stack to route the connection it's going to go out there.

2) Clash of IP ranges. I'll have to do a test or two to check this. It's the dreaded 10.x.x.x problem. My internal network (LAN) is configured for this address range as is a lot of corporates out there. When I attach to the GPRS network, I also get a 10.x.x.x address back from the SP.

I need to check if there is no conflict here.

Will let you know the outcome.

Will test the new .dll today.

Bryce,

The routing issue is due to conflicting IP addresses or rather ranges. Look like it might be a Windows IP stack thing. If I change my LAN addr. away from the 10.x range, the test works fine, with the default gateway setting still active on the LAN.

On the MMSC Default Route.

I've entered an "*" in the MMSC Routing field, stopped and started the server but still get the same result.

When I submit via the WEB, I almost immediately get the "Retrieving Message" message on the recipient handset and nothing else. This seems to indicate the SMS is still coming straight to the handset and not via the operator.

That's weird. The only way that I could see the IP addressing being a problem is if both your corporate net and your mobile operator were assigning in the same exact 10.x.x.x range.

Or maybe you have a 255.0.0.0 netmask configured for your LAN card?

For a typical connection, what IP address do you have on your LAN connection? What is the net mask? What IP address are you assigned on the mobile operator connection?

On the other issue, I'm curious why the message is not getting routed through the MMSC. Could you e-mail me (nowsms@now.co.uk) the SMSDEBUG.LOG and MMSCDEBUG.LOG? You need to put both the SMSGW and MMSC into debug mode ... editing SMSGW.INI and adding Debug=Yes under the [SMSGW] header, and editing MMSC.INI and adding Debug=Yes under the [MMSC] header. IF you could also e-mail me SMSGW.INI and MMSC.INI, that would be a help. The bug in "beta 2" is that if there is nothing set under the [Outbound MMS Routing] section of MMSC.INI, then the web interface will always try to do direct MMS delivery. (We've got a fix that will also look at MMSC.INI - [MMSC] - DefaultOutboundRoute, which is a variable set on the "MMSC Routing" dialog page. But before I send that out, I'd like to better understand why your config is not working properly in case there is another problem.)

Follow-up. I'm not sure if this is the problem that Jannie is experiencing, but I mention this in case there are others who have a problem where when sending an MMS message, the MMSC handles the message directly and sends an MMS notification over SMS instead of using the expected "MMSC Routing".

Aside from the bug and work-around mentioned above, the MMSC always attempts direct delivery if the recipient phone number is a phone number listed in the "MMSC Users" list. Remove the recipient phone number from this list if you wish to send an MMS to the recipient via an external MMSC.

Bryce,

Removing the phone number from the MMSC Users list allows the sending via an external MMSC. So, at long last, I can get a MMS out!!

What if I need the number in the list, or won't I?

Jannie,

You shouldn't need a user in that list unless you want to have that user connect in with a phone to send MMS messages through your server.

If you do add such a user, the only restriction is that any messages sent through your server to that user will go through direct MMS delivery. (Since the user needs to have their phone configured with settings to be able to send through the server, it should not have a problem receiving messages in this way.)

Sateesh,

What mobile operator SIM do you have in your phone or modem that is connected to the NowSMS gateway?

What are the settings that you have configured in NowSMS for the outbound MMS routing?

Hi Sateesh,

There is no response at all coming back to our WAP connect attempts.

Are you sure the settings are correct?

In particular, it looks like you are calling a dial-up networking profile named "oops". Is that profile making a GPRS connection or is it making a dial-up connection? If it is making a GPRS connection, then if you create the profile yourself, the profile may not be setting the correct GPRS APN.

If you let NowSMS dynamically create the dial-up networking profile ("Network Connection:" field has a "Modem:" entry selected instead of a "Dial-up:" entry), then NowSMS can make sure to configure the correct GPRS APN.

Do you have a phone that can currently send/receive MMS messages through that mobile operator?

I've been searching the web (including the kk.airtelworld.com web site of the operator) trying to find information on what GPRS APN and what WAP gateway IP should be used for the "MMS Settings", but I have not been able to find this information.

What are the settings that are configured for MMS on your mobile phone?

I've install Beta 2 release with updated mmswap.dll (size 57344 bytes) [link to the file was published above]. So, I got the error message during testing connection about that it cannot connect to wap gateway.
I have create the file MMSWAP.INI in nowsms folder with
---
[MMSWAP]
Debug=Yes

---
in it, but log file is not created.
I have restared the service many times and maked tries to test the connection as well.

Is there something that I do wrong way?

Bruce, according to your advise, the connection test works fine now. The problem was in the correct APN name. Thanks a lot ;-).
But the log file is still not created...

Fantastic. It can be difficult to determine the correct settings to use, but hopefully over time we can collect a good list of settings for different operators.

I'm not sure why the mmswapdebug.log would not be created. The DLL looks for the existance of MMSWAP.INI in the NowSMS program directory (same directory as MMSWAP.DLL and the other program files), with the content that you describe above.

The log is appeared today, but I still do not know why...
But I got the strange behaviour when I am trying to send the MMS message from nowsms web interface.
I guess that it tries to send the message, connects to the server and so on. But the message will not come to the recipient. I have done many tries.

The log...

Alexander,

I've uploaded a newer version of MMSWAP.DLL to http://www.nowsms.com/download/MMSWAP.ZIP.

I think we're running into a timing problem here. The WAP gateway is sending an out-of-sequence abort to a transaction that was already completed. NowSMS doesn't realise that the abort is related to a previous transaction and gets confused.

So we have applied two changes. First, NowSMS won't get confused by an out-of-sequence abort reply. Second, we've adjusted some timing settings that should keep the WAP gateway from getting confused in the first place.

I've applied your new mmswap.dll, and according to this log, the MMS message has been sent correctly, but the recipient doesn't get it. I guess this is a provider's problem, but the message, which is sent directly from the headset, goes to the recipient right.
Bryce, what do you think (about the listed log) - did nowsms do everything right? (and I should consult with my provider...)

Hi Alexander,

Based upon the information in the log, the MMSC accepted the message for delivery, so this is quite puzzling. It even assigns a message-id, which is a further positive indicator that the message has been accepted by the MMSC..

When you send a message from the MMS client in the phone, and it works ... do you address the message using the same phone number format:

79035615555

I'm wondering if maybe when you send from the phone, you don't include the country code? And whether the MMSC might not understand a recipient with a country code in that format (normally you would put a "+" in front of the number if a country code is included, although most MMSCs should be able to figure out that you have included it if it is present without the "+").

Yes, Bryce, you are right. The problem was in missing '+' in the number. Also, the MMS service is in test mode in Beeline (the good news that it is free of charge ;-), so the MMS messages goes very slow (about 6-7 hours).
