Hi Dilip,

The GPRS connection to the portalnmms APN is failing with a generic error code.

I believe that Hi Dilip,

The GPRS connection to the portalnmms APN is failing.

I believe that portalnmms is the correct APN to be used for Vodafone India.

I would guess that either the modem is not able to get a strong enough signal for GPRS, or that the SIM card in the modem is not provisioned for MMS.

I'd suggest moving the SIM card from the modem to a phone, and confirm that the phone can send/receive MMS using that SIM card.

Yes portalnmms is correct setting for APN. I checked on vodafone site. GPRS signal is enough strong as i am able to send mms through mobile phones from same location.
Please reply..

Hi Dilip,

My previous message was slightly garbled, but let me repeat this advice:

quote:

I would guess that either the modem is not able to get a strong enough signal for GPRS, or that the SIM card in the modem is not provisioned for MMS.

I'd suggest moving the SIM card from the modem to a phone, and confirm that the phone can send/receive MMS using that SIM card.

I want you to confirm that the SIM card you are using in the modem is actually provisioned to be able to send/receive MMS.

In many cases, when a SIM card is shipped with a modem, it is provisioned for internet access only, because that's what the operator assumes you would be using the modem for.

By moving the SIM card from the modem to a phone, you can easily test to see if the problem is with the SIM.

The error codes that you are getting are indicating that the GPRS connection is failing.

Assuming the GPRS signal strength is OK, this likely means that the SIM does not have access to the APN.

I don't know what i am missing in testing with modem. What settings do i need to set?
Any other solution?

Hi Dilip,

What version of NowSMS are you using?

I do see one unusual thing looking in your log file. NowSMS keeps having to set the default GPRS APN, because the modem keeps forgetting it.

Normally, in this situation, NowSMS would tell you that there is a problem with the modem driver, and it would try to apply a fix to the modem driver. However, this does not seem to be happening in your case.

So let's try manually applying a fix.

Go into the Windows Control Panel, and locate the modem configuration area. In the properties of the modem, you want to add an "Extra Initialization Command" of:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","portalnmms"

Let's see if that makes a difference.

Hello Des,

First i tried NowSMS 2008 then now trying 2009.
I added "Extra Initialization Command" AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","portalnmms" through control panel.
No success. :-(.

Hi Dilip,

The only other thing I can think of suggesting is to try different SIM cards in the modem.

For some reason, the GPRS connection to the "portalnmms" access point is being refused.

You might also want to try uninstalling all of the modem drivers, then re-installing the modem.
