I've setup NowSMS with e-mail to sms forwarding.

My client has now configured his e-mail client to use NowSMS as SMTP gateway.

It works fine for <phone#>@sms.domain.name but we get "550 Recipient unknown or not local" for all other addresses : xxx@gmail.com

I'd like the NowSMS gateway to send SMS's when needed and also forward other non local out using SMTP and DNS lookups.

Is this possible ?

Hi Peter,

I had to do a little research on this one.

Let me start by saying that I don't recommend using NowSMS as a general purpose SMTP/POP3 mail server.

The idea behind configuring an e-mail client to connect to NowSMS using SMTP/POP3 is for sending/receiving SMS and/or MMS.

It is assumed that a separate e-mail account would be configured in the e-mail client for general purpose e-mail.

That said, if everything is configured correctly, NowSMS will act as an SMTP mailer for local user accounts. You just have to keep in mind that NowSMS is a very simple SMTP/POP3 mail server.

If you are getting "550 Recipient unknown or not local" errors, then this suggests that the client is not configured to use SMTP authentication. NowSMS will only forward outbound SMTP e-mail if the SMTP client authenticates.

Ahh... As soon as I added auth for the inbound SMTP then everything works. It makes perfect sense that you need to authenticate to be allowed to relay.

The problem I'm trying to solve is that one system (alerts and monitoring system) will be sending out both e-mails and text messages depending on the priority of the situation. The system can only have one SMTP server and therefore I need NowSMS to accept both type (actually they are all e-mails :-D ) and send some out as SMS and relay others to SMTP.

It works now!
