Hi

I've been looking at http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/3148.html and from that it seem that I can't send messages out using "SMTP Relay Host" and NOT using SMTP Auth for inbound messages?

Is that correct?

I've added the server that is allowed to "relay" e-mails to the SMTPIPAddressList key in the [MMSC] section, but that doesn't have any effect.

I'd like to allow all senders (per e-mail) to relay but of course only authorised servers (per ip).

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

That thread is a few years old. Still pretty accurate, however it predates the capability to allow local clients to use NowSMS as a very basic mail server with POP3 and SMTP.

If an IP address is listed in the SMTPIPAddressList setting, then NowSMS effectively will be an open SMTP relay for any messages that originated from that IP address. (How NowSMS relays the message externally then depends on whether or not it has a relay host configured.)

You should use extreme caution with this setting.

I understand the issues related to this but can't get it to work.

Even if I specify *.*.*.* (HIGHLY problematic!) I always get "550 Recipient unknown or not local"

Suggestions?

Hi Peter,

I mis-spoke.

NowSMS will not act as an SMTP open relay, even with the SMTPIPAddressList setting.

The SMTPIPAdressList setting is only used for allowing relay to SMS/MMS.

SMTP messages are only relayed when SMTP AUTH is used.

Thanks for being precise :-)

Unfortunately not the answer I was hoping for.

Ok. I have to re-architect some services and see if I can work around this.

Thanks

Peter
