MM7 is an MMS standard for application to person MMS message submission, which is clearly defined by the 3GPP. However, instead of following the 3GPP specifications for MM7, Ericsson implemented their own proprietary version of MM7 which is considerably different from, and incompatible with the 3GPP definition of MM7. The Ericsson MM7 implementation is compatible only with the abstract definition of MM7, but uses a completely different XML schema. You'd be surprised how many mobile operators are using the Ericsson MMSC. And many of these mobile operators are surprised when they find out that the Ericsson MM7 implementation that they are using is completely non-standard. In fairness to Ericsson, it is possible that they began their development work on the MM7 interface to their MMSC prior to June/July 2002, when the 3GPP released v5.3.0 of 3GPP TS 23.140 specification that introduced the MM7 XML Schema. MM7 was introduced in an abstract format in v5.2.0 of that specification, in March of 2002. Apparently, Ericsson based their implementation on the abstract definition of MM7, implementing their own XML schema and some minor extensions. So it is understandable that Ericsson may have begun implementation of the MM7 interface into their MMSC prior to the MM7 definition being finalised by the 3GPP. However, more than 2 years have passed since the MM7 definition was standardised, and it is disappointing to see a major vendor continuing to promote a proprietary, non-standard variation of MM7. However, NowSMS now supports this Ericsson proprietary "MM7-like" protocol, making it easier to connect to operator MMSC services. When defining an "MMSC Outbound Routing" connection, a configuration option has been added to use Ericsson MM7 for the MMSC connection. For receiving messages from an Ericsson MMSC, a standard "MMSC VASP" connection is define in NowSMS. NowSMS automatically recognises messages that are submitted in the Ericsson MM7 format, and responds appropriately for those requests.
