Hi,

For background on this, please see http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm.

Basically, what is happening is that the phone is receiving an MMS notification message, but it is unable to retrieve the content of the MMS message.

When NowSMS is configured to perform direct delivery as an MMSC, it will store messages and generate a dynamic URL pointer to the MMS message. It sends an MMS notification message to the recipient which contains a URL pointer that tells the receiving device how to retrieve the MMS message content. The receiving device needs to connect back to the NowSMS server with this URL in order to retrieve the MMS message content.

So, basically, the following things can go wrong:

1.) The NowSMS server is not accessible over the internet (or not accessible via the data connections configured for the MMS client in the mobile phone).

2.) The "Local Host Name or IP Address" setting configured on the "MMSC" page of the NowSMS configuration does not specify an IP address or host name that is valid for connecting to the NowSMS server over the internet (or over the data connection configured on the recipient mobile phone). Keep in mind that the recipient device needs to be able to connect back to the "HTTP Port Number" specified on the "MMSC" page of the configuration dialog, using the host name or IP address configured in the "Local Host Name or IP Address" field.

3.) Firewall issues are preventing the receiving device from connecting back to your NowSMS server. Some mobile operators have strange firewall policies that prevent mobile phones from connecting to content servers on non-standard ports. When in doubt, try port 80 as the "HTTP Port Number", which will mean that you cannot run another web server on the same PC as NowSMS with standard port number settings. As an alternative, where mobile operators block non-standard ports, I have also seen that 8080 is generally not blocked and is a good alternative.

4.) The mobile operator blocks message delivery from external MMSCs. Basically, the connectivity settings pre-configured for the MMS client in the operator's mobile phones may not support connections to external MMSCs.

What to do if external MMSCs are blocked?

You can configure NowSMS to perform message delivery over a GPRS modem to an operator MMSC. This type of configuration, and further pointers are also described at http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm.
