Hi Bruce,
Am using NowSMS with Siemens MC 35i,Managed to get all my settings right and can send and receive MMS,but I am facing a problem,I can only receive MMS when i take out the sim from the modem, put it back in the phone and send a MMS out,put it back in the modem and restart my SMSC service, then I get all the pending Notifications and can get all the MMS in the MMSIN directory, now if i send a MMS to the modem from another phone it is unable to receive the MMS as well as the notifcation, but able to receive normal SMS,If i repeat the exercise described above with the SIM it works.I read sth on the forum about the mode switch between GSM and GPRS problem for external modems .Do I have to buy another modem and dedicate it to receive MMS while my earlier modem just receives SMS notifcations. Is there any workaround without buying additional modems.

Thanks and Regards
Parikshit

Hi Parikshit,

What mobile operator are you using?

It almost sounds like the mobile operator thinks the phone is off-line when the SIM is in the modem.

The mode switching between GSM and GPRS is just something that NowSMS has to do with most modems when it sends an MMS, or when it retrieves MMS based upon a notification received over SMS. So I don't think that is an issue here.

One idea that I have to try ... and this is really just a wild guess.

In the SMSGW.INI file, under the [Modem - your modem name] header, add the following statement:

CommandPostInit1=AT+CGATT=1

When NowSMS initialises the modem, this command will force the modem to attach to the GPRS network at a low level (not an IP level). I'm just curious to see if that makes a difference.

Do you have access to any other modems? I'm wondering if things appear different in other modems.

Hi Bryce

I have tried out your suggestion. But it did not work out.

- I am using Starhub mobile operator (Singapore)
- No, I do not have access to any other modems

Please find the logs and the ini file.

Hi Parikshit,

Unfortunately, I do not know what to recommend next.

Everything seems to be working properly ... except that the MMSC stops sending notifications.

I'd suggest doing some more experiments. Does turning the modem off and back on (without stopping NowSMS) wake the MMSC back up to send notifications again?

Does sending an MMS wake the MMSC up?

If possible, I would suggest trying another modem. While I have had good luck with the MC35, I do recall one site where they did not receive any MMS notifications with that modem.

The thread is here:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/1710.html

In that case, the MC35 was not receiving any MMS notification messages.

There is a lack of follow-up on the above thread, but here's what happened. The MC35 was receiving MMS notifications properly in the UK if it used a Vodafone or Orange SIM. But with an O2 SIM, no notifications where received. (We never tried the trick of removing the SIM and putting it back in.)

By the time I got to test our MC35 with an O2 SIM, it worked. We went back to the original person who was having problems ... they tried again, and it was now working.

So, unfortunately, we don't know why there was a problem in the first place.

If possible, try to borrow another modem from someone ... or try getting one that you can return if it does not work for you.
