I have NowSMS working for SMS send / receive on my laptop using my 6310i over infrared, but now need to get MMS receive working (using 5.0 beta). I do not have a GPRS modem, but have a number of handsets (Nokia 7110, 8310, 6310i, Motorola T720) and an Orange UK contract SIM.

I understand that in order to receive an MMS into the PC the phone must not support WAP push or MMS. Can I use the 7110? This does not support GPRS either but perhaps I can retrieve the MMS over CSD if I connect to the Orange WAP gateway?

Guidance or alternative options would be much appreciated.

Will,

Under some circumstances, you might be able to use the 7110 ... but I don't think you could do it with Orange. I would be more optimistic if it was a Vodafone SIM (and maybe O2, but sorting through their tarriffs might be an issue). The SIM would need to be enabled for GPRS and MMS, even if you weren't using GPRS.

Before you started trying to configure NowSMS to retrieve the MMS messages ... I'd suggest putting the SIM into a real phone, and testing with a phone to ensure that you had proper settings that allowed MMS over CSD. Unfortunately, most Nokia phones don't allow MMS over CSD (notable exceptions that allow it are the 3650 and 7650 ... I'm not sure if the Motorola T720 allows it, but I do know most SonyEricsson phones allow it).

Assuming that you came up with settings that allowed MMS over CSD, you would need to configure a dial-up networking configuration in Windows to dial into the CSD access number that you used in the phone. In the "MMS Settings" in NowSMS, you would configure the "Network Connection" to be the "Dial-up:" entry for the dial-up networking connection that you created. You'd also need to specify an IP address for a WAP gateway that could access the operator MMSC to retrieve messages.

This last bit is where I think you would run into problems with Orange. The IP address for the normal Orange WAP gateway is "192.168.71.35". You can connect to that gateway via GPRS (APN=orangewap), or you can connect to it by CSD by calling "+447973100500" with a username of "Orange" and password of "Multimedia".

However, I don't believe that the Orange MMSC can support connections from the normal Orange WAP gateway. It only accepts connections from a special WAP gateway setup for MMS only. The IP address of this gateway is "192.168.224.10". I seem to recall that if you use the "orangewap" GPRS APN, you cannot connect to this gateway. You have to use the "orangemms" APN to connect to this gateway. So I'm not sure whether the standard Orange CSD dial-up number could connect to this gateway ... which I believe you would have to connect to in order to interface with the Orange MMSC.
