May operator block sending MMSs using GPRS modem?
I had many trials with Orange Israel. Test connection went OK, but when sending I had "Error: Internal Error and annoying beep"

Zeev,

Where exactly do you see this "Error: Internal Error"?

The "test connection" button only validates that we can connect to the GPRS APN, and connect to a WAP gateway over that GPRS connection.

Unfortunately, it doesn't validate the MMSC connection.

So it is possible that the MMSC Server URL is incorrect. Or that the wrong GPRS APN is being used for MMS (usually mobile operators have two or three GPRS APNs, one of which is specifically used for MMS).

What are the settings that are using?

Also, please make note of the following general tips on this type of connection:

1.) There are two "Login Name"/"Password" configuration settings in the "MMSC Routing" definition. The first is used to pass a username/password to an MMSC, and the second is for authenticating to the GPRS APN. The first is rarely used or supported, so it is best to leave it blank. (Some operators ignore it, others return "403" errors, others accept the message and silently discard it.)

2.) Make sure that the default sender address is blank, and "Allow sender address override" is NOT checked.

After you've checked the above, enable the "MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG" on the "Serial #" page of the configuration dialog.

Then repeat your sending attempt, and post the data from the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG.

I found the problem- it was much simpler than I thought- I just didn't fill the text body of MMS-only recipient details and subject.

I thought error message would be more specific :-)
Anyway another problem exists now- I cannot use all GPRS modems I have for sending MMS. Following models were tested:
Samsung X460
Samsung C100
Samsung E700
Samsung E310
Nokia 6210
All of them showed several kind of errors such as "Connection problem" or CME ERROR :3
Only Nokia 6600 worked fine.
Should GPRS modem have some special support for sending MMS thru?
SMS sending works fine using above mentioned models.

Hi Zeev,

I have not had much experience with using Samsung phones as a modem. But I would be interested in what type of errors you are seeing with those phones as a modem.

Do note that the Nokia 6210 does not support GPRS, so that would be a problem for it.

In order to function properly as a GPRS modem (for a connection to an operator MMSC over GPRS), the modem needs to support the AT+CGDCONT command.

With one of the problem devices, try connecting to its COM port with HyperTerminal. After connecting to the COM port, hit Enter a couple of times. Then type ATZ and press Enter ... the modem should respond back with OK.

Type AT+CGDCONT=? and press Enter ... what do you see returned?

I've had an unconfirmed report of a Samsung phone/modem that was not including OK as part of its AT+CGDCONT=? response, which could be a problem.

Zeev,

Am I correct that there was not an "OK" as part of the response?

For example, if I try this on one of my phones, I get:

+CGDCONT: (1-10),("IP"),,,(0-1),(0-1)

OK

I'm just trying to confirm the unconfirmed report about Samsung phones not returning an "OK" response to these commands.

If that is the case, we can probably work around this. So, please let me know.

You're right- there was no OK after the answer.

Zeev,

Ok. One more question. What happens if you issue the following command:

AT+CGDCONT=3,"IP","bogusapn"

This is just specifying a bogus APN for CID 3, which is probably unused on the phone. I am wondering if that command responds back with an OK, or what happens here.

If we can get this info, we should be able to put together a patch that lets us work without requiring the OK response.

Hi Bryce,
Here is the response for your command.
+CME ERROR: 21

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn" responds by OK.
Then if checking by at+cgdcont? phone responds by:
+CGDCONT: 1,"IP","apn","0.0.0.0",0,0
+CGDCONT: 3,"IP","","0.0.0.0",0,0

Hi Zeev,

Ok. Let's see if we can work-around the issues with that device.

I'm going to send you an e-mail with an updated MMSWAP.DLL file. Use the file in that ZIP to replace the existing MMSWAP.DLL in the NowSMS directory.

And then I'll be curious if that makes a difference when using one of the Samsung phones as a modem.
