I have a customer (MNO) who is using the NowSMS MMSC. We integrated ok with no real problems. However, we were recently switched to a new instance of the MMSC, and now we are facing problems sending a MM7 MMS. When we submit the request we are getting a connection refused error, but strangely the message is still sent some time later...

What diagnostics should we ask to be turned on, and which log files will be helpful in isolating the problem.

Are they having other problems?

The first question I would ask them is whether or not the system is overloaded? (Extremely high CPU usage) Or is the MMSC constantly restarting (event log would show repeated reports about MMSC startup)?

I'd try to ask if they are having other problems and encourage them to contact us.

It sounds like you are seeing connection timeouts, not connection refused (because if the connection was refused, the MMSC would never even see the messages you are sending out).

Can you relax your timeouts? Or are you seeing a connection reset before the MMSC acknowledges your response?

It would be interesting to see a WireShark trace from your end to get a better idea of what you are actually seeing.

We've offered to connect remotely to try to make sense of things there, but there are frequently no replies for weeks at a time.

Since you mention that you were recently switched to a new instance of the MMSC ... I wonder if this is a new additional server or a replacement server ...

Further note ... I would also suggest they enable the MMSCDEBUG.LOG as the first place we would start looking for clues is with MMSCDEBUG.LOG and MMSCDEBUG.BAK.

Follow-up ... since my original response, we have researched two MMSC installations that were encountering system stability problems with their MMSC.

An update to address these issues, version 2013.11.15, has been made available. http://www.nowsms.com/nowsms20131115
