I need to move our existing installation from Windows 2003 to 2012 server.

I understand that some configuration and folders have now moved to c:\programdata.

We want to maintain existing data and queues and make sure that receipts for messages that were sent out through the original server can still be matched up correctly on the new server.

Can you please advise exactly what folders and files need moving to c:\programdata and which ones we should copy to the new server after installing nowsms?

We are currently on 2012.02.16 version as I understand the paths changed again with the latest versions, once we've successfully moved servers we'll then look at upgrading to the latest version

Hi Darren,

The location of the configuration data is the biggest issue.

But the easy answer is to just copy it all over to the same location(s) on the new server, and all should be OK. However, if you are also changing from Windows 2003 Server to a newer version of Windows, there may be other considerations.

Here's more of an explanation.

We have changed the default location of this configuration data twice in our product history.

2006 and earlier: Data and config files in the same directory as NowSMS program files.

2007 thru 2012.11.16: If running on Windows XP or 2003 Server, Data and config files in the same directory as NowSMS program files. If running on later versions of Windows (Vista/7/8, Server 2008/2012), ProgramData\NowSMS is used.

2012.11.30 to present: For compatibility with older versions, look first for config and data in ProgramData\NowSMS. If not found, use the same directory as NowSMS program files.

So here is the issue. Because you are running Windows 2003 Server, I expect config and data files are in the same directory as NowSMS program files.

If you move to a new Windows 2012 Server running NowSMS 2012.02.16, it will expect config and data files in ProgramData\NowSMS.

If you upgrade the NowSMS version first, both old and new server will expect config and data files are in the same directory as NowSMS program files. So to move the data you will only need to copy the NowSMS program files directory to the new server. (We recommend running the NowSMS install into this same directory after the copy, as that will setup shortcuts for launching NowSMS. Then manually activate the services.)

I realize this is confusing. So if I can clarify any points, please don't hesitate to ask.
