Hi,all
Now I'm using the trial NOWSMS gateway for MMS test.I upload the MMS file to the web server and want to download it with my 7600. But there nothing happened.
More info:
In the lab enviroment, one equipment simulates the network, and the 7600 can PDP activate and browse the page.
In the ethereal log, the testnokia1.mms is composed by nokia tools and another is sent by the NOWSMS gatway. I have defined the Mime type for mms file.
My question is whether the UE can download the mms file from webserver and rebuild the mms or not? If can, how can I do?
Thank for your replying!

Generally speaking, the MMS architecture is not setup to allow a User-Agent to download an unsolicited MMS message in this fashion.

The MMS delivery process requires that the client first receive an MMS notification that contains the URL of the MMS message to be downloaded.

If you try to download the URL from a browser, you're cutting out the notification step, and it won't work.

You can have NowSMS send out an MMS Notification for the URL that is on your web server. You just can't use the browser on the phone to initiate the MMS client to download the message, it requires the notification trigger.

Hi Bryce,
Thanks a lot! With the notification the UE can retrieve the mms from the web server. but I don't know how I can send the notification to UE by nowsms. I have no SMSC (just fakesmsc).

Hi Ali,

Well, generally you can't. At least there is no easy way to do it.

It'd be easiest to configure NowSMS to use the GSM modem capability of a mobile phone as the MMSC, so that you can actually send out the MMS notification over SMS.

It is possible to send the MMS notification over IP. However, if you're on a public network with the phone, the phone generally don't have a public IP address that a notification can be sent to over IP. Instead, you're behind a NAT (network address translation) router, which keeps you from being able to push to it.

If the phone was on a public IP, you could specify an IP address as the phone number field in NowSMS, and the push would be sent over IP. But generally you only have a public IP when using CSD (circuit switched data).

Hi Bryce,
Thanks for your replying! Using the GSM modem actually is the easiest way for real network, but in the lab there has one equipment simulating the network and the UE has a private ip address. So can I send the notification to ue with nowsms in this case?

I'm sorry but I've been so busy that I have not had time to reply to all of the messages in the forum recently.

There are quite a few people who use our product in the type of configuration that you describe.

In some cases, they configure an HTTP SMSC interface in NowSMS, so that when NowSMS has an SMS to send, it calls an HTTP script, and your HTTP script interfaces with your network test equipment. (A lot of people use Agilent network kit which has an HTTP interface for this.)

If you don't want to involve SMS at all, you can also generate notifications over IP. The "Send MMS Notification" function in NowSMS will accept an IP address in place of a phone number, but it only does a one-off send of the notification (no retries).

If you use the MMSC functionality of NowSMS, you can also configure it so that virtual phone numbers are mapped to IP addresses. You send to a phone number, and internally we route the notification to an IP address (and use retry logic). (See http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/4184.html for more details.)

Its ok that everything is on a private IP address. Just make sure to configure the "local host name or IP address" on the "MMSC" page of the NowSMS config to be an IP address that the device will be able to access over IP.

Yes.

In order to use MMS or WAP (browser) services through a mobile operator, your phone needs to be configured with settings that are specific to that mobile operator.

I would suggest that you visit one of the more general mobile phone discussion forums, such as http://www.howardforums.com or http://www.esato.com. This forum is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product, and your question is a bit off-topic here.

Also, please note that many mobile phone operators have such configuration information on their web sites. And for Nokia phones, Nokia has a service at http://www.nokia.com/phonesettings, although not all mobile operators are supported through the Nokia service.

Hey, I have a question. There's a free music site called AllAcess Music Group, since a couple of weeks ago, they put up fair-quality audio clips of current songs that you can d/l in .wma format, but now they have changed their server, I guess, and it's a MMS site. I tried to d/l a song but it said 'unsupported format'. I'm totally new to MMS, apparently it's only for cell phones, but it works on my computer, I just can't d/l it. so if somebody knows how to d/l from this site, please let me know thanks.

p.s.: here's a sample link.

I doubt that it is an MMS site ... it costs money to send an MMS, so I doubt a free site would be sending MMS. (You can't download an MMS, it has to be sent to you.)

Different phones support different formats for audio, and my guess is that the format that the site is serving up is not a format supported by your phone. I would expect that web site to have more information on what devices are supported ... this is the support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway software product, so this is outside of my expertise.
