In theory, yes. However this doesn't really work in practice outside of a test lab setting (because phones don't have dedicated IP addresses).

The following thread talks about how to configure NowSMS for sending MMS notifications over IP:

I have a friend who use a small java program in his phone to send and recive sms and mms. I think he is using an imps server but he keeps his secrets.
Is it possible to make Nowsms to be able to send and recive sms and mms using a java program just like an operator sms and mms gateway? Then we could send almost free sms and mms.

I've seen a couple of different Java programs for cheap sending of SMS.

The way they work is that they take advantage of the fact that bulk SMS can be purchased at a cost that is cheaper than what the end user is charged for sending SMS from a mobile.

So end users sign up for an account with an SMS provider. And when they want to send an SMS message, they use a Java application on the phone instead of the regular SMS client. Usually they still receive SMS the same way through the built-in SMS client on the phone ... they just use this separate Java client to send SMS. And the Java app typically is just making an HTTP request over GPRS to connect to the SMS service provider and send a message.

Instead of paying 10p a message, they might be paying 5p a message. And frequently, the rates for international SMS can be offered much cheaper than what the mobile operators charge in this type of setup.

It's an interesting approach. More complicated to accomplish for MMS than for SMS.

I understand that Nowsms was created as an operator sms and mms gateway and can do what the operator gateway can do. So, i was thinking that there is no reason in using the operator gateway, when i can use my gateway (nowsms) and an wap connection. All i need is a program in the phone, just like an imps client, to connect to the gateway(nowsms) and take the messages. In this case my clients (and only them) who are using this program will pay for gprs trafic, but the message can cost less than one eurocent.
I see that you have experience in WV protocols, so I was thinking that you can do that.
I`ve seen something like that working, but i don`t know if and when it will be a commercial product, but it is possible.

The only way that you can get the message cost under one eurocent is if you limit it so that subscribers can only communicate with each other. (If you want to use this path to send SMS to non-subscribers, termination charges for SMS are more expensive than this in a lot of countries.)

It's an interesting thought. My thinking is also that I'd like to see some WV/IM clients that are more efficient in their bandwidth utilisation, and this would be a reality.

But if you're talking about a commercial service, I think there is bigger money in allowing people to send SMS to people who aren't subscribers to your service.

Something to think about ...
