I know that phones must be hayes compatible, but that's something that most peopleo don't know about their phones, so I would like to know what phones are you all using, which are compatible with NowSMS at least for SMS Send and receive.

May you all tell me your working phone models?

Mine is Wavecom WM02-G900 ;)

Phones and modems that I have lying around:

GSM/GPRS modems:

Siemens MC35 Terminal (external)
Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 (PC card)
Nokia D211 PC Card (send SMS/MMS only, no receive support ... I need to try the advice in http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/3789.html to see if the D211 will work with a standard driver instead)

Phones (send/receive SMS, send MMS only, unless otherwise noted):

SonyEricsson T68
SonyEricsson T68i
SonyEricsson T610
SonyEricsson T637
SonyEricsson T637
Ericsson R520
Ericsson R380 (SMS only)
Nokia 3650 (send SMS/MMS, no receive SMS)
Nokia 6210 (SMS only)
Nokia 6600 (send SMS/MMS, no receive SMS)
Nokia 6820
Nokia 7110 (SMS only)
Nokia 7210
Nokia 7650 (send SMS/MMS, no receive SMS)

Other phones that I can think of which have been mentioned by customers:

Panasonic GD87
Nokia 6220
Nokia 6310
Nokia 6310i
Nokia 7250
Nokia 92x0 (send SMS, no receive SMS)

I'm sure there are others, but it is late on Friday, and those are the only ones that come to mind. I'll have to remember to make additions to this thread as they come to mind.

Phones that definitely DO NOT work:

SonyEricsson P800
SonyEricsson P900

Hi,

Well, from the list of Sony Ericsson phones you could also conclude that the Sony Ericsson T630 also works.

I can confirm that it works for sending SMS and MMS. We haven't tried yet to receive SMS but I assume it will work :-)

Kind regards,
Dunia.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't expect it to work. The AT command interfaces for CDMA that I have seen in different modems either do not support SMS, or only support text mode SMS.

If anyone knows of a CDMA modem that has support for binary SMS formats, please advise.

We've recently performed testing on the Multitech GSM/GPRS external modems.

There is one model for North America GSM 850/1900 (MTCBA-G-F2), and one for the rest of the world GSM 900/1800 (MTCBA-G-F1).

These modems work great for sending/receiving SMS and MMS with NowSMS. They also are extremely fast sending SMS over GPRS (50 to 55 messages per minute in our tests, possibly even faster with an external antenna).

Biplab,

I have not tested the Nokia 6610, but it should support receiving SMS. It is only the Nokia Series 60 phones (like the 6600, 6620, 3650, 7650) that have a limitation on receiving SMS.

And you are correct, the Nokia 3200 does not have any inbuilt modem functionality.

I'm going to have to go back and clean up some of the garbage on this thread at some point. But to answer some lingering questions and issues.

According to Nokia's web site, the Nokia 3200 does not have GSM modem functionality. It does support the DKU-5 cable, but apparently this cable can only be used with some of the Nokia software for doing things like synchronising info with the phone and transferring files.

The following link on the Nokia web site has a table which indicates that the Nokia 3200 does not support the Nokia Mobile Option (NMO), which I believe to be the GSM modem support:

http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0%2C%2C54698%2C00.html

Regarding "will you be branching into phones like the PDA/Mobiles and the O2 style of phones" ... it really depends on what is meant by that question. I assume it is asking about using those devices as modems. If there is a spec for those devices that makes sense, and sufficient market share, we would consider it. But for the most part, it's more a question of whether or not those devices will implement a GSM modem interface going forward.

I do not have any information on the Siemens SX1, and whether or not it provides a GSM modem interface.

However, I do know that the Siemens SX1 uses Nokia Series 60 software.

Nokia Series 60 phones can be used as a GSM modem for sending messages, but NOT for receiving messages. I would expect this receiving limitation to be present in the SX1.

As it is using the Series 60 software, I would expect sending to work, but I haven't had any feedback from anyone on this device.

The Nokia 3586 is a CDMA phone, so I would not expect it to support a GSM modem interface, and I would not expect it to work as a modem with NowSMS.

Hi, i wish to buy a new phone just for send text sms.

Plz suggest me the best phone i should buy, based on it's PRICE and PERFORMANCE.

my client is local branch of a bank. They wish to send notifications, so messages could get queued in large amounts and the phone might have to send message 24hrs a day.

I know no phone will be able to work 24 hrs a day but still i would appreciate if u all could help me make a choice.

i could install multiple phones and manually interchange them after short intervals.

will a gms modem be a better option. but i want it to be cheap option.

Plz help me in making this decision as you all have good experience with this stuff.

thanx in adv.

Regarding the Sierra Wireless 555. We normally don't work with CDMA modems, however for MMS sending through an MM1 connection, you can probably use this.

Does the 555 provide an always-on IP connection, like the 750 can under GPRS?

If so, then configure the 555 to automatically connect. Under the "MMSC Routing" connection, select MM1 for the type, and check "Use Specific Network Connection (GPRS Modem)". In the "Network Connection" field, select the network driver for Sierra card. (And you'll need to supply the IP address and MMS Server URL for Verizon's MMSC.)

Alternatively, if the modem does not automatically connect, you'll need to create a dial-up networking connection in Windows to make the IP connection. And in that same "Network Connection" dialog, select the "Dial-up" profile, so that NowSMS knows to talk to the operator MMSC over that connection.

That is doubtful. Low-end Nokia phones generally do not have in-built GSM modem support. Looking at the features information on the Nokia web site, I don't see anything to suggest that they have this capability.

Wavecom m1206-s have a software glitch that makes them crash while sending SMS over GPRS for an hour or two. This makes the modem not suitable for commercial applications utilising SMS over GPRS. The same is probably true for Multitech modems, as they're built on the same Wavecom modules.

Wavecom is currently working on the issue, I will post additional information as it becomes available.

To the best of my knowledge, the Siemens MC35 does not have a version that works on US frequencies.

I'd recommend the Multitech in its North American version which supports both the 850 and 1900 bands.

Does anyone know if the Wavecom software glitch which makes them crash while sending SMS over GPRS been resolved? If not is there an anticipated resolution date?

There are three known methods to stabilise Wavecom modems

- updating firmware (for a patch, please email me on shincom@covad.net)
- disabling TCP/IP stack - AT+WOPEN=0 must be issued once.
- once it hangs, AT+WAC must be issued to interrupt the process that caused it. In NowSMS, use commandpreinitX
=AT+WAC

Above works very well for sending in CSD mode. The same issue with SMS over GPRS has not been resolved, although these measures make it a bit more stable.

I will post additional information as soon as the solution to the problem is found.

Has anyone had success in sending SMS in GPRS mode commercially? If so, I'd be interested in knowing which modems were used.

From the sound of things, NowSMS does not think that the message you have received matches the criteria that are defined in any of the configured 2-way commands.

Here is a thread with general 2-way troubleshooting tips:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/4520.html

If you still require assistance, please start a new thread (as this is off-topic for the current thread), and post details of your SMSGW.INI file, and the content of the received file(s) in the SMS-IN directory.

Newbie question and I apologize if this is the wrong thread - can I use my Motorola RAZR as a GSM modem to pump MMS into the Cingular network?

Otherwise - what phone/modem should I purchase for reliable uptime?

Hi Jahir,

To the best of my knowledge, the Nokia 3100 does NOT provide a GSM modem interface, and will not work as a GSM modem.

Hi Chris,

I haven't had much feedback on the RAZR.

But generally speaking, we haven't had great experience with using Motorola phones as GSM modems.

In fact, because of some differences in how Motorola phones implement the "AT command" support for sending SMS messages, most versions of NowSMS will not recognise a Motorola phone as a GSM modem. The error that is returned by NowSMS is "Modem does not support SMS".

We've done some more research, and have discovered that Motorola does include support for this GSM modem/SMS functionality in many of their phones, however they implement some functions differently.

So, we've just posted an update, v5.51f, which can be downloaded from http://www.nowsms.com/download/latestpatch.zip. This is a ZIP file that can be installed on top of any existing v5.51 release. (Stop currently running NowSMS services, use the files in the ZIP to update the existing installation, then restart the NowSMS services.)

This version will get past the "Modem does not support SMS" error on Motorola phones that do include this GSM modem/SMS support.

However, be forewarned that our testing has revealed that a number of these Motorola phones do not support sending binary messages because of an apparent bug in their GSM modem support when processing any message that includes "user data header". (User data header is used for WAP Push, MMS notifications, EMS, Nokia Smart Messaging, and long text messages.) For this reason, using a Motorola phone as a GSM modem might only allow you to send text messages. Although binary SMS messages are not supported, it will still be possible to send MMS messages by routing MMS messages to an operator MMSC over GPRS.

So, this shouldn't be a problem for your requirements, since you are looking to deliver MMS messages in this way.

To route MMS messages to an operator MMSC over GPRS, you need to add an "MMSC Routing" definition to connect to the operator MMSC over GPRS, and make that your default route for sending out MMS.

General configuration info on this setup can be found here:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_content/Connecting_to_operator_MMSC.htm

Also, you might find the following helpful for some understanding of how MMS works:

http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm

MMS settings are operator specific, and you can find many different operator settings (including Cingular) in the following thread:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/485/491.html

Discussion of alternative modem devices can be found in the following thread:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/4218.html

---

Unless you've already got the RAZR, you'd probably be better off with a phone that can also support the SMS interface. Personally, I've found SonyEricsson phones to be quite good for modem use. I've used the T68, T68i, T610, T630, S700, K700, and K750 over time, and they've all been quite good. But since you might be in an area where Cingular's coverage is in the 850Mhz band, you'd probably want a phone that supports that band ... like the T637 or S710a. I've used both of those phones as well, which are basically just slight variations on the T630 and S700, but with GSM 850 support.

All that said, a dedicated modem generally offers better reliability. Multitech has one with GSM 850 band support which you can get through airdesk.net.

I've posted some information about Nokia and SonyEricsson phone models with GSM modem support in another thread, but it is worth re-posting here.

Nokia is not very good at publishing specifications on which of their phones include GSM modem support, but they are better than most other manufacturers.

I have compiled the following list of Nokia phones, which based upon their specifications, appear to have GSM modem support. I have also indicated how the phone can be connected to the PC, and for USB or serial connections, indicated the cable required. Nokia phones that use the Symbian OS can be used to send messages only, not to receive messages.

Please note that this list is based upon Nokia's published specifications, which do not clearly state whether or not a device has GSM modem capability. Therefore, there may be some errors in this list.

Recent SonyEricsson specifications list the following phones as supporting a GSM modem interface:

K700 series
S700/S710 series
K500/F500 series
Z500 series
V800 series
Z1010 series
T68/T68i
T300/T310
T610 series
T630 series
T230/T238/T226
T290
Z600

The SonyEricsson phones listed above should be fine for sending and receiving SMS ... some Nokia phones do not support receiving SMS, and if such a limitation is known, it is noted above as "send only". All of these phones should be fine for sending MMS. HOWEVER, do not expect to find a phone modem that can be used to receive MMS. To receive MMS via a modem, you need to have a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device (e.g., Siemens MC35 Terminal, Wavecom, Multitech, Sierra Wireless Aircard, various PC card options).

It is also worth mentioning that we frequently get asked about the Nokia 3100 and 3200. The Nokia 3100 and 3200 do not provide GSM modem support.

Also, to the best of our knowledge, the SonyEricsson T200/Z200 series do not provide GSM modem support. Also, the P800/P900/P910 do not provide GSM modem support.

I know that the SonyEricsson K750 does, as I have one of those.

My understanding is that the W800 is a rather slight modification to the K750, so I would expect it also to provide GSM/GPRS modem support.

I was trying to send sms with my K750i handset. Once I got it working somehow and it sent all of the messages I composed earlier, but I don’t manage to get it working again.Modem log shows no communication when i'm trying to send an sms I tried the different settings, read through the quick start guide and everything.

My modem works as I can communicate with it via hyperterminal. I can also query it.Nowsms application tests it successfully.
I had 2 modems installed for this device “K750 modem…”,and “K750 data modem…”.(What is the difference?)

My question is: Does K750i works/ compatible with this software(v5.51)?

I use a K750i regularly, and don't have any problems.

Either the "K750 Modem" or "K750 Data Modem" seems to work fine (I've even configured NowSMS to use both simultaneously, which seems to work ok, even though I do not understand why).

What does your SMSOUT-yyyymmdd.LOG file show?

The Nokia N70 and 6680 are "Series 60" phones. Nokia Series 60 phones are ok for sending SMS and MMS ... but they will not support receiving SMS for 2-way.

I've reviewed detailed technical documentation for the SonyEricsson K600i, it should work ok for sending/receiving SMS and sending MMS.

I don't have any information on either of those Samsung models.

K750
W800
Z520
W600
W550
W900
W810

(Any "i", "c" and "a" variants ... meaning "international", "chinese" and "american" ... within the series should work properly.)

The Nokia N70 is a Series 60 device. Series 60 devices support sending SMS messages via the GSM modem interface only. They do not support receiving SMS messages via the GSM modem interface.

Unfortunately, that is a limitation of the design of current generations of Nokia Series 60.

Regarding the SonyEricsson Z550, it doesn't appear that SonyEricsson has updated their modem specifications for this model yet. Based upon this model's similarity with other models, I would expect it to work. However, I do not know for certain.

If its a Windows Mobile device, or a Blackberry, then the answer is most likely no. I have yet to see such a device that implements a GSM modem interface.

Newer models of both types of devices implement a "modem interface" which allow them to be used as an internet modem for GPRS/EDGE/3G connectivity, but they do not implement the part of the "GSM modem" interface that pertains to the sending and receiving of SMS messages.

Bryce (or anyone else who knows),

In your posting of October 05, 2005, above, you list various models that you believe support sending/receiving of SMS. This includes the Nokia 6101, which I am looking at using.
You also stated there (my italics):

HOWEVER, do not expect to find a phone modem that can be used to receive MMS. To receive MMS via a modem, you need to have a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device (e.g., Siemens MC35 Terminal, Wavecom, Multitech, Sierra Wireless Aircard, various PC card options).

From my reading of the NowSMS 2006 documentation, my understanding is that this is not now the case.
Can I now use a handset as a GSM/GPRS modem and use one of the 2 ways documented (direct connection to the operator MMSC or retrieving over WAP/internet) to receive MMS (pg. 212 of the NowSMS 2006.pdf manual)?
Furthermore, the documentation seems to indicate that I shouldn't use an MMS-capable phone as the modem if I want to receive MMS messages (on http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Connecting_to_operator_MMSC.htm - it says 'Note that you can still not use an MMS compatible phone as a GSM modem if you want to be able to receive MMS messages through the gateway. This is because an MMS compatible phone intercepts the MMS notification and tries to process it automatically, never forwarding it to the gateway. You must use a GSM/GPRS modem device to take advantage of this feature.')

With NowSMS 2006, is this still the case?

If there's more detailed information about MMS elsewhere in the forums, please point me there.

Thanks,
Terri

Hi Terri,

No, to the best of our knowledge, we are not aware of any mobile phone handset that can be used as a modem for receiving MMS. Generally speaking, a mobile phone handset can only be used as a modem for sending MMS.

(This is because the MMS client in the mobile phone will usually intercept all MMS notification messages before they can be presented over the modem interface.)

Thanks for that Malcolm.
Wondering then if I could use a handset that isn't configured to receive/process MMS, so that I could receive the notification SMS part of an MMS, and then retrieve the rest of the MMS through WAP?

Or is my only choice to use a modem such as the Siemens MC35 Terminal, as mentioned in previous posts above?

We haven't seen one.

It's a bit difficult to explain, but MMS notifications are a type of "WAP Push" message.

The software running inside of a mobile phone is typically constructed so that when a WAP Push message is received via SMS, the message is removed from the received SMS queue and dispatched to the WAP Push router.

The MMS client is an application that is registered with the WAP Push router, so that WAP Push messages of the MMS content type (or application id) are routed to the MMS client.

So even if you disable the MMS client, the message is still going to get passed to the WAP push router. And while most phones do have an option for disabling WAP push, what this configuration option is usually referring to is disabling the display of WAP push "service indication" and/or "service load" messages ... which are particular types of WAP push messages which are usually presented directly to the end user.

If you could find an older phone that supported a GSM modem interface but didn't support WAP push, then maybe it would work. But you'd be going back to 2001 or earlier model phones ... and back then phones with GSM modem interfaces were even rarer.

The Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 has been mostly superceded by the 850 and 860 models which also support UMTS/3G, in addition to GSM/GPRS. On-line retailers like Expansys tend to carry these.

The Falcom 75 is a decent low-end USB modem (out of stock at Expansys, but probably available elsewhere).

Sorry, but we don't have that detailed information on specific features with different phone modems.

Generally speaking, I would expect this feature to be supported by most dedicated modem devices. But phones acting as a modem tend to be more limited.

On the specific question of SonyEricsson, I do have information from the following thread:

http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/18724.html

In that thread, testing determined that the SonyEricsson T68i, T610, and T630 did not support this capability. However, support was present in the K750, and possibly the K700, suggesting that SonyEricsson added support for delivery receipts in their GSM modem implementation around the time of the introduction of the K700 model. (I also know that we specifically tried the W800 and it supported this as well.) Models introduced since the K700 are likely to have this functionality, but possibly not lower end models.

Dear All,

I have tested the Now SMS with Nokia 6280 and LG B2050. With both them I am able to send SMS but not able to receive them or process them. So outbound SMS are definately works where as inbound SMS are to yet be tested positive. I hope to get it running soon.

Regards,

Samyak

Doubtful.

That is a Windows mobile device. We are not aware of any Windows mobile devices that implement the GSM modem interface for sending or receiving SMS messages.

Earlier in this thread, someone mentioned that this phone worked ok as a modem for NowSMS ... which I'd assume means that they tried it for sending SMS.

We have not tested that phone directly.

As a testing point, I'd suggest trying to use HyperTerminal to connect to the modem, and see if you can get an OK response back if you type AT and press Enter. If that works, try AT+CSMS=0 ... and see if that also returns OK. If it does, then try it with NowSMS.

Sony ericssson W800i doesn't seem to work

I send the following at commands, and it comes back with error:

at
OK
at&v
ERROR
at+csms
ERROR

Is anyone able to get W800i to work? Specifically for sending and receiving sms?
