Hi, What other modems have you tried? I can tell you that the GSM modem implementation in nearly all Nokia phones is limited such that the modem interface can be used for sending only, not receiving. For Nokia phones, this limitation applies to all models introduced since 2006 (and all Symbian/Series 60 devices before that). To be able to receive messages, I would recommend a dedicated GSM modem device, such as USB stick modems from Option and Huawei. There is no need to keep a browser window open for processing received messages. -- Des NowSMS Support

Some older Samsung phones will work for both sending and receiving over the modem interface. Android phones, this includes Samsung Galaxy, are send only. The reason for this is because while the chipset in the phone might support sending and receiving, SMS clients in modern smart phones remove the messages from the modem chipset as they are received. Older phones used to keep the messages on the modem chipset or even on the SIM. Newer, smarter phones simply do not support this. As I stated above, to be able to receive messages, I would recommend a dedicated GSM modem device, such as USB stick modems from Option and Huawei. (If you are not familiar with these devices, see http://www.nowsms.com/tag/gsm-modem for some examples.)
Unless you can find a 2005 or earlier device that does not run Symbian, there is none.
The modem interface (AT commands) used by NowSMS were originally defined by a GSM standards organisation. Very few CDMA devices support this protocol.
It is a low level protocol issue. You set that configuration option, and the modem will try to use the SMS protocol over packet switched instead of circuit switched. If this is supported by your mobile operator, you will still be charged for sending/receiving SMS. The only advantage is that when supported, it is faster. (Although these days, those operators that do support it tend to throttle it so that it is not abused.) -- Des NowSMS Support
