Here is my understanding of free text messaging as provided by a number of websites. These websites which offer free text messaging (and MMS messaging?) purchase a block of SMS/MMS messages from the mobile operator as a Value Added Seller. From this point the website can resell these blocks of messages to clients. In the free approach I presume these services rely upon advertisement on their website or insert small text ads at the bottom of each sent message.

A method that seems to be in the realm of "free" messaging is submitting through the operator's email gateway. For instance I sent an SMS message to my web-based EMAIL and noted the reply email address. It contained my phone # and a text message email domain of the operator (ie, 1234567@txt.myoperator.com). I simply replied to the message and was able to directly SMS message back to myself. This suggests that one is able to freely SMS any friends on the operator's network thru standard email. I'm figuring most, if not all, mobile operators offer similar style email gateways.

How is my understanding so far?

How do these free methods prevent spamming, or distinguish between spam and an overly active "legitimate" user?

Is there a FAQ, book, article, or web resource for me to refer to for a better understanding of VAS?

Thank you for any comments.

Your understanding seems pretty good ... except that the free e-mail to SMS operator gateways pretty much exist only in the USA, not in other parts of the world.

The reason for this is different billing models for SMS on mobile phones in the USA vs. the rest of the world. In most of the world, the sender pays for SMS, and the receiver pays nothing. Therefore, with an e-mail to SMS there is no party to charge.

In the USA, both sender and receiver typically pay. To encourage SMS usage, most operators in the USA have set-up e-mail to SMS gateways, and in that case only the receiver pays.

I don't know how those free methods prevent spamming, although I am sure that they must have some controls on them. (I believe that there are also legal issues involved that prohibit spamming of a mobile phone, especially as it is the receiver that gets paid. But I don't know how that can reliably be enforced internationally.)

As for being a VAS ... normally I'd call someone in this business an "SMS Aggregator". They buy in bulk capacity and resell, similar to how things work for traditional long distance telecom.

In addition to purchasing from an operator, the operators have interconnection agreements with each other. So you might buy SMS access from an aggregator dealing with a foreign mobile operator that provides better rates to deliver to your local operator than you would be able to achieve locally. (Speed and performance, of course, become an issue.)

You could also become a mobile operator and negotiate your own interconnection agreements ... but most independents who have gone this route have done it through a tight partnership with an existing mobile operator.

I'm not sure that there are any books on this. Basically it's a game of margins and searching out the lowest prices. And it is constantly evolving as interconnection agreements expire and new ones are signed ....

So, how do aggregator usually work?
Don't they ever use the free e-mail gateway system? Does these kind of free gateways provide any guarantees?

And what if the aggregators don't want to charge for the message termination. Can they agree with the operator only them to be charged (for both sending and receiving)?

And, one last question, do aggregator usually pick one provider and send everything through them or connect to all the major providers? how do they know which provider to send the SMS through?

HI... for some FREE SMS:

www.smseverywhere.com
(not sure how many you can use in a day but, it seems like a lot and DID WORK to a US Verizon mobile while I was on my PC in UK).

and try (not sure how it is or, how "FREE" it is):

http://www.download.com/SMS-it/3000-10440_4-10384017.html?tag=dir

(OR)

http://www.mawnet.com/

The mawnet.com is the same as the download.com version but, is definitely free (as near as I can tell) as it is the trial version. It is the second download on the page.

HOPE THIS HELPS someone somewhere.

Has anyone at nowsms (ie bryce) thought about making this forum locked down, rather than open to anyone without a login, it might stop the kiddies using it as a chat forum.

For example, I don't think the fact that "anonymous loves spike" is really relevant to any sms based discussion.

If you want to chat, use IM

Dear Mr Bryce,
somewhere on the top of this page you said that email-to-sms gateway is not available outside US.
This is .....""FOOLISH""...you dont know whats happening outside your cave. In INDIA almost all networks are having Email-to-Sms gateway. My friend from China told me they too have it. Its available in Srilanka....and where not?
