Hi, Can anyone suggest a low cost mobile phone which can be used with the gateway for both 1) sending AND receiving SMS 2) sending AND receiving MMS? Will the sony ericsson Z200 model which supports gsm/gprs work with nowsms? Thank you. Amanda | |||

Hi Amanda, According to the SonyEricsson documentation for the Z200, it does NOT support a modem interface. Recent SonyEricsson specifications list the following phones as supporting a GSM modem interface: K700 series S700/S710 series K500/F500 series Z500 series V800 series Z1010 series T68/T68i T300/T310 T610 series T630 series T230/T238/T226 T290 Z600 The above should be fine for sending and receiving SMS ... and for sending MMS. HOWEVER, do not expect to find a phone modem that can be used to receive MMS. To receive MMS via a modem, you need to have a dedicated GSM/GPRS modem device (e.g., Siemens MC35 Terminal, Wavecom, Multitech, Sierra Wireless Aircard, various PC card options). -bn | |||

Unfortunately, Nokia is not as good at publishing specifications on which of their phones include GSM modem support. I have compiled the following list of Nokia phones, which based upon their specifications, appear to have GSM modem support. I have also indicated how the phone can be connected to the PC, and for USB or serial connections, indicated the cable required. Nokia phones that use the Symbian OS can be used to send messages only, not to receive messages. Regarding the Nokia 8250, I would expect it to work with a DKU-5 cable, but I cannot find enough detailed information to confirm this. As the Nokia 8250 is a Series 40 device, I would expect it to be capable of both sending and receiving SMS. (Just note that Nokia phones do not forward all received binary messages over the GSM modem interface ... but text messages should be fine.) -bn | |||
