The standards defintion for the "AT commands" used for sending/receiving SMS is ETSI GSM 07.05, which can be downloaded from the ETSI web site (http://www.etsi.org). ETSI GSM 07.07 also has additional "AT commands" not directly related to SMS.

You either: 1.) Need an account with an SMS service provider which allows you to submit messages over an internet connection. 2.) Or you can connect a GSM phone with an inbuilt modem (or a dedicated GSM modem device) to your PC, and messages can be sent out over the modem via AT commands. (You are charged for this on your mobile phone bill.) == When an SMS message gets delivered to a mobile phone, ultimately the mobile operator is going to charge someone for that delivery. (In most of the world, the sender pays. In the USA, both sender and receiver pay in most cases.) So, when I talk about an SMS service provider account, that is something that you would have to pay for. That said, if you are an individual user, and you only need to send text format messages, there are a variety of free SMS web sites out there. These sites pay for the messages to be sent, but subsidise their costs through advertising. So they can be a good solution for individuals who occasionally need to send a text message. Also, in the USA, most mobile operators allow you to send a text message through e-mail by sending to phonenumber@operator.specific.domain.name, or through the web site of the mobile operator. (In this case, you are not charged as the message sender, but the message receiver is charged for the SMS ... although most people have so many free SMS per month as part of their plan.) Outside of the USA, these e-mail gateways typically do not exist because receivers are not charged for receiving an SMS message, and there is no way to charge a sender via e-mail. I hope that helps in concept. For more sophisticated messaging needs, our Now SMS/MMS Gateway software can be used to manage sending SMS messages through GSM modems and/or service providers. (Free service providers are not supported by this software, as these providers generally require that you go to their web site and view advertisements before you can send any messages, as that is how they make their money.) -bn
