The best advice that I can give you is to download the Ethereal protocol analyser.

Use a WAP simulator (like the ones from Nokia or Ericsson) to connect to a WAP gateway ... with the protocol analyser monitoring the conversation.

Then look at how the protocol analyser interprets the sent/received data, and maybe that will assist you in understanding what is described in the specifications.
