Hi,
I have a the following questions which I hope you can assist me.

1. I understand that nowsms can support more than one GSM modems. What is the maximum number of modems it can support?

2. If I had 4 GSM modems connected to the nowsms, does nowsms had some kind of load balancing method to distribute the output of sms among the four modems?

3. If I had 4 GSM modems connected to nowsms, can I write a ASP script to decide which modem to send out the sms based on our company business logic?

4. If I need to broadcast a sms (the sms can either be a text or an operator logo or a mono ringtone) to 100 different mobile number. How long would it take for nowsms to send this sms out via a.)one single modem b.)four modems ? Basically I am interested in the thoroughput of nowsms and the factors that can affect it.

thank you
Kath

Hi Kath,

1.) The number of modems that can be supported becomes an issue for Windows and any modem/port drivers that need to be installed in the PC.

NowSMS will only natively recognise COM port numbers up to COM20: But it can address COM ports beyond that if you configure NowSMS to connect to the modem via a modem driver.

We currently have a limit of 200 SMSC connections that can be defined (mix of modems and SMSC links). I certainly would not recommend 200 modems, however ... nor would I know how to configure a system to host that many.

2.) Yes.

3.) For each modem (or SMSC connection), you configure a "Phone Number" (or "Sender Address" for an SMSC connection) that is associated with the device. When you submit a message, you can specify a "&Sender=" parameter which tells NowSMS to route the message out through a particular modem.

4.) The throughput varies depending upon mobile operator conditions.

This sounds like I am trying to avoid the question, so let me explain.

Generally speaking, 6 to 10 messages per minute is the max that a traditional GSM modem can handle. The actual throughput varies depending upon signal strength and operator conditions (some operator systems are slower than others).

However, if your operator supports SMS over GPRS, then higher speeds are possible. Not all operators support SMS over GPRS yet, but on ones that do support SMS over GPRS, we have seen speeds of 30 to 40 messages per minute. (See http://www.nowsms.com/support/bulletins/tb-nowsms-006.htm.)

Hi Bryce,
With regards to SMS over GPRS, I have a class 10 GPRS modem and a SIM from my local telco which support "SMS over GPRS". How do I enable this "SMS over GPRS" with nowsms?

thank you
kath
