Hi,

Is it possible to use the NowSMS 2-way SMS receive functionality even though the messages are received to a connected GSM modem? I will be using nowSMS to send SMS through my 6310 which is acting as a GSM modem. Can the 2way facility retrieve the incoming SMS from this phone/modem?

Hi Philip,

Whether or not this is possible can be phone dependent.

While I have not personally tried the Nokia 6310 with NowSMS, I have searched my support archives and found log files with questions from people who were clearly able to both send and receive SMS using NowSMS with the 6310.

So I would expect 2-way SMS functionality to work on your Nokia 6310.

The problems usually come up with so-called smart phones which do not always include full GSM modem support. Or, some may allow SMS sending only.

For example, Nokia Series 60 phones (including but not limited to the Nokia 6600/3650/7650) and other phones based upon the Symbian OS (including but not limited to SonyEricsson P800/P900 & Nokia 9100/9110/9210) will NOT allow SMS messages to be retrieved from the phone through NowSMS. They generally support SMS sending only (although the P800/P900 don't even support that).

So I would expect 2-way SMS functionality to work on your Nokia 6310.

However, 2-way MMS functionality would not (MMS send only). Generally, 2-way MMS requires a dedicated GSM modem device such as the Siemens MC35 (external GSM/GPRS modem) or Sierra Wireless Aircard 750 (PC card).

Sorry, Quick question.

"However, 2-way MMS functionality would not (MMS send only)."

So the Nokia 6310 can send MMS through using NowSMS while acting as a GSM Modem???

Thanks,

Philip

Philip,

That is correct.

Only GPRS capability is required to be able to send MMS messages. So even though the 6310 is not an MMS compatible phone, I know of at least 2 or 3 situations where customers are using either the 6310 or 6310i to send MMS.

The account with the mobile operator still needs to be provisioned for MMS (and if the operator asks what phone you are using, you'll have to give them a model number that supports MMS to appease the customer service call center script).

P.S. - A slight additional clarification. GPRS is not always required for sending MMS, but it makes both direct delivery and delivery via the operator MMSC available as options. See the following thread for a distinction between those two delivery methods: http://support.nowsms.com/discus/messages/1/589.html
