Is there any method that can be used to send the pictures (monochrome) such a way that all the mobiles can display it? It's probably not MMS because most of the older mobile handsets don't have MMS feature.

I am required to send a picture through the SMS gateway so that all phones can display it.

Hi Roshan,

No, there is no perfect solution for this.

Before the days of MMS, there were essentially two competing "standards" for sending monochrome images via SMS.

Nokia Smart Messaging was a proprietary format developed by Nokia. They openly documented the format, but if rival handset manufacturers wanted to implement support for this format, they had to license it.

Needless to say, few handset manufacturers jumped at the opportunity to license the Nokia Smart Messaging format. Instead, Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens (E, M & S) got together to define a "standard" format that they called EMS (Enhanced Messaging Specification).

EMS eventually did become part of the ETSI and 3GPP standards for SMS. However, it was overly complicated. And Nokia never did implement it in any of their phones. And by the time it was standardised, MMS was right around the corner.

Because of Nokia's market share, Nokia Smart Messaging was more widely implemented than EMS.

Nokia loosened the licensing restrictions, and more handset manufacturers ended up implementing Nokia Smart Messaging.

But you won't find Nokia Smart Messaging implemented on smart phones like the iPhone, Blackberry, or Windows Mobile. (I don't think any of those support EMS either ... I think Windows Mobile has a registry key where some EMS support can be enabled, but it's not enabled by default.)

So ... there is the background on your dilemma ...

Is there any method that can be used to send the pictures (monochrome) such a way that all the mobiles can display it?

No. You can support a significant percentage of older devices using Nokia Smart Messaging.

But, by targeting that audience, you lose the smart phone audience.

I'm afraid there are no good answers here, other than possibly giving users the choice between MMS and the old picture messaging from Nokia Smart Messaging.

If you do experiment with Nokia Smart Messaging, be forewarned that you should stick with an image size of 72 x 28 for best results. That was the size of all of the examples in the Nokia Smart Messaging specification ... and recent experience has shown us the modern Nokia mobiles have problems supporting images that are not of this size.
