Hi,

I am using a SmartPhone as a GSM modem and it is working properly in windows. When I try to add the modem to the NowSMS Gateway, I receive an error (attached) stating that "Modem does not support SMS -- Error"

Do I need to use a different phone? Is there something I can do (or something I'm not doing) to get around or through this problem?

Thanks.

This particular error message is rarely generated for an incorrect reason. (The only exception is that with some external modems, I have seen this error generated because a PIN was required.)

Basically, a lot of the "so called" smart phones (I use that term generically, so as not to refer to only phones running MS software) are too smart to provide SMS access via the modem interface.

For example, SonyEricsson P800/P900 phones do not support SMS commands via the GSM modem interface.

Also, Nokia Series 60 phones support sending SMS via the GSM modem interface, but not receiving.

I haven't had any experience with attempting to use an MS Smartphone as a GSM modem, but I would not be surprised if they had neglected to implement the AT commands for sending SMS in their Smartphone.

Basically, we use the following commands to test whether or not the modem supports SMS.

First, we verify that we can send simple AT commands to the modem, and receive a response back, such as ATZ, and ATE0V1.

After those initial tests, we send the following commands to test for SMS support:

AT+CSMS=0
AT+CMGF=0

The error message that you are receiving indicates that the AT+CSMS=0 command is returning the response "ERROR". This likely indicates that the modem does not support the AT commands for SMS.

Generally speaking, more of the "middle of the road" phones have the AT command set for SMS support. We've been asking people to contribute information about modems that they have used with NowSMS in the following thread:
