We are having issues with the data that is being reported via
xmlstatus file. I am using this xml file to initiate alerts at a certain
threshold based on the smsoutq value.

For some reason the smsoutq value is a lot larger than what is actually reported in the application. For instance, today the smsoutq is showing over 11000 in the queue. However, the application only shows 50.

Does this value reflect something else or is it some type of cumulative value?

Hi Jeff,

This is odd.

Has it been consistently off like this (or are you just starting to use this xmlstatus interface)?

I've done some checking, and the value returned in the xmlstatus is a counter maintained by the server, which is not necessarily accurate.

It should be accurate, except that it does not keep track of message files that are added or deleted without going through NowSMS directly (for example writing message files directly to the Q, or deleting them).

As your count is too large, I'm wondering if perhaps at some point some message files were deleted directly?

Restarting the service would re-init the counter.

This particular counter is used for the statistics reporting only, it has no operational impact. I checked, and even the e-mail alerts that are triggered by queue size do not use this particular counter, they use a more accurate count.

After reviewing this, our engineering team has decided that they will change the queue size reported by xmlstatus to use the queue size calculated for the alerting feature, as it is more accurate.

However, a question remains ... why are your results so far off? Is it possible that messages were manually deleted from the queue?

We have been pulling that data for the last 3 weeks or so. The number does go up and down, but it's generally pretty high.

I would have to dig in to get more information on whether messages are being deleted directly or not. I believe all messages are going through NowSMS, but I could be wrong.

Hi Jeff,

I just wanted to give you a follow-up. We did make a change along the lines that I mentioned earlier.

I am still curious about why the message count would be so far off...hopefully it is for one of the reasons that I mentioned.

In light of your experience, we decided that returning the queue size as calculated for the alerting feature was a preferable and more accurate solution.

This change was included in an update that has been posted at http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20120501.zip.
