Dear Support,

Currently we are using Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2018.07.17 version.
May I know, is it this version is stable now?

Because I noticed that, suddenly it failed to receive sms from our database.
Sometimes I received error notification "Interface is not available" for all modems.
But when I checked from modem the status is "Connected".
Then I try to stop & start the SMS Gateway service, after that all modems up again and continue send the sms.

Sometimes I did not received error notification, I thought there is no problem with the service but there is no incoming traffic even I try send sms to nowsms.
Then I try restart again SMS Gateway service and received the incoming traffic after that.

Hi,

There are 2 issues that we are aware of, which might be related.

If you have any USB or serial connected modems, version 2018.07.17 (and possibly other versions) has a restart problem. The current version download has been replaced with 2018.10.01.

If you do not have any USB or serial connected modems, this is not an issue.

If these are Android devices, we have been recently troubleshooting a problem where individual modems stop receiving SMS, but they can still send.

An update to the Android app includes a potential fix, and displays some additional status information to try to troubleshoot the problem.

I don't have problem with restart for connected modem and Now SMS/MMS Gateway interface.

And there is no problem with individual modem also, because I still can send test sms from interface for each of connected modem.

My problem is, Now SMS/MMS Gateway suddenly can not received the sms.
After I stop and start again SMS Gateway Service then seems okay, can received incoming sms.
FYI, we are using PHP script to send sms. That script select records from our database and send to nowsms. There is no issue previously, the issue exist after I upgrade to Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2018.07.17 version.

Perhaps I do not understand, but your problem sounds like one of the ones I described.

First, can you confirm that all modems are Android devices.

Yes, as I said, in the problem that I described, they can still send. Received messages are stuck.

Before I again assume that you are encountering the same problem, let me ask this.

When received SMS stops, does NowSMS show any messages being received ("Recent Activity" in the web interface or SMSIN-yyyymmdd.LOG)? I am guessing that NowSMS is not reporting any received messages. Am I correct?

In the web interface, under Admin/Status, are the modems connected? How many connections are showing? (I'm guessing 2 for each modem.)

The other thread references a cloud customer...they do not have the power to stop and start the SMS gateway on the server side, so their problem might not appear exactly the same. But the underlying problem seems to be that the SMS receiver in the Android app gets stuck in its connection to the gateway. Starting or stopping the app or the gateway will restart this connection.

That is why I think the best solution is to try the app update. We are awaiting feedback from that other customer before we push this update out via the Google Play Store.

SMSIN log still got record during that time.
SMSOUT and SMSWEB log don't have record.

Sample of log from SMSWEB:
2018-10-28 20:19:00:739,0.0.0.0,gensupp,5BD850A5,Text,Recip=+60198839123;Text="xxxxxx"
2018-10-28 20:50:58:394,0.0.0.0,gensupp,5BD858E5,Text,Recip=+60195130123;Text="xxxxxx"

Based on above log, nowsms not received any messages after 20:19:00:739 until I stop & start service, then continue received messages at 20:50:58:394.

Sample of log from SMSOUT:

TEST9B2B, I tested from the interface and received that sms after that which mean there is no problem with modem connection right?

I'm sorry, but I still don't understand.

I think we are having some confusion over language/terminology, so let me try to clarify.

When I refer to sending and receiving, it is from the perspective of the NowSMS gateway and the modem.

When the modem sends a message, the gateway logs this to SMSOUT.

When the modem receives a message, the gateway logs this to SMSIN.

When your application submits a message, the gateway logs this to SMSWEB.

To try to avoid confusion, I will stop using send/receive, and instead will use the log file names.


The Android app update that I mentioned addresses an issue where SMSIN stops, but SMSOUT is ok.

I think that is the problem you are having? If not, please explain what stops.

As i said before, SMSIN log still having records during that time..which mean no issue with modem right?

The problem is no record in SMSWEB and SMSOUT log during that time. We can not send messages to gateway until i restart the service. Something wrong right?
There is no issue with internet connection during that time.

OK, so when this happens, look for files in the SMS-IN directory. These are the IN messages.

If there are IN files in SMS-IN, but they are not processing, this suggests the 2-way command is hanging. What is your 2-way command? HTTP or local?

NowSMS normally waits up to 5 minutes for local, or 2 minutes for HTTP, before timing out and moving to the next message.

I probably need to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG to troubleshoot. If you want to send one to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Bryce in the subject line. And please indicate the time period of interest.

Hi,

Seems like this issue happened again.
I've checked files SMS-IN directory, yes still have IN messages.

We're using HTTP for 2-way command. Seems like not 2 minutes its hanging but until I restart the service. Its around 30 minutes.

I've checked in SMSDEBUG.LOG, there is nothing error showing during that time.

OK, this does not sound like the same problem.

I would like to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG, especially the part showing the last message processed...as this would help us understand what is getting stuck. If you have that, send to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Bryce in the subject line.

One possible solution is to add 2WaySMSThreadCount=## to the [SMSGW] section of SMSGW.INI. I'd start with a lower number like 5.

This allows multiple 2-way commands to process at the same time.

After enabling this, continue to periodically check for IN messages stuck in the SMS-IN directory...there may be 1 or 2 that get stuck, while others continue to process. I've never seen this happen before, but based on what you have described, I am thinking we might see this type of problem.

Also add 2WayKeepAlive=No to SMSGW.INI. This setting probably won't make a difference, but it simplifies the HTTP command processing logic.

Is the HTTP command using https:// ?

Are you still seeing a problem?

If no more problem, did you add 2WayKeepAlive=No to SMSGW.INI?

We have done further investigation, and believe our HTTPS implementation may have a problem with 2-way commands, especially when keep-alive sockets are enabled (the default). We are preparing an update, but I wanted to see what your experience has been with these settings.

Seems like this issue happened again.
May I know, is it debug log only save the latest log?
Because I want check yesterday log, but it only show latest log.

Anyway, is it nowsms can restart by itself when there is no transaction coming within a few minutes?
I mean restart the main service not restart the process.

May i know..is it related with content of sms that make it stop?
Or its due to too many incoming traffic?
Im still thinking why it always happen recently. If due to version, im already updated latest version of nowsms for android version and also gateway version.

Assuming this is the same problem (2-way SMS commands stop processing), we believe this is an issue with our SSL/TLS driver when processing 2-way commands that use HTTPS.

I think the only way we're going to figure out what is happening is to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG.

Make a backup copy of SMSDEBUG.LOG and SMSDEBUG.BAK before performing any restarts. We need to review these logs to understand the situation.

Send logs to nowsms@nowsms.com with Attention: Bryce in the subject line.

One question...when you say "when queue is high then it stop / hang. " I assume you mean SMS-IN directory queue. How large is this queue?

Okay...will provide the log later.
I can see the high queue at outbound queue under service tab..keep increasing..sometimes 500++ 3000+
