developers and now'ers!

I need to finish an evaluation report on NowSms gateway and i cannot get nowSms gateway to communitcate with my samsung c100 mobile phone.

i bought a serial data cable first and when i connected everything and went to "add smsc" -> "gsm modem/phone" -> then i choose the correct port but i got the error - "cannot initialise modem"..."make sure the modem is powered...".
i toggled through all the available ports shown but i still get the same error. i tried this on 3 different pc's but no success!

do i have to install a driver for the serial connection to work? (the cable did not come with any driver - but i understand that some of the genuine cables do). if anyone has info on this driver plz lemme know.

then i bought the MA-660 infrared usb connection - but the c100 is not listed on the compatible phones - i still bought it to try it since many samsungs are supported. installed that and the handset manager everything went well, and when i activate infrared on my phone and bring it to range it is detected as "samsung c100". but when i try to connect nowSms to the phone, using the available "standard IR port connection" i get the same error as above - 'cant initialise mode'!
does someone have any idea what im doing wrong?

Plz note that i had nowSms gateway to work using a siemens c45 connected thru usb port. i had to give away the phone before i finished my evaluation report on the gateway.

Are you sure that the Samsung C100 supports a GSM modem interface?

Are you able to use HyperTerminal (Programs/Accessories/Communications/Hyperterminal) to connect to the COM port and send AT commands?

At a minimum, you should be able to type ATZ and Enter ... and get an OK response.

For a GSM modem, you should also be able to get an OK response to the following two commands:
