Got a request from a potential customer for a plug-in to Outlook for sending messages to MMS recipients. Is this something already taken care of in the gateway ? Which picture format may be attached to emails sent to MMS recipients ?

Olaf,

By default, the SMTP gateway in the MMSC only allows sending to user accounts that are registered to the MMSC (accounts in the "MMSC Users" list can be e-mailed as username@mms.domain.name).

But it is also possible to configure access to the SMTP gateway of the MMSC so that you can use an SMTP interface to send an MMS message to any recipient by sending a message to phonenumber@mms.domain.name.

To do this, an e-mail client must be configured to login to the SMTP gateway using SMTP AUTHentication.

Basically, you need to configure one or more user accounts in the "SMS Users" list on the gateway. This list specifies what users are allowed to login to the gateway to send messages through the web, SMTP and/or SMPP connections. Each user account has a check list for what type of connections are supported.

Assuming that an account is created in this "SMS Users" list on the gateway, you can then create an additional e-mail account in Outlook. There is no e-mail inbox on the MMSC, so you need to define the account to point to some other inbox, but you define the outbound SMTP access for that account to use the MMSC as its outbound SMTP mail server ... and you check the setting that says "My Server Requires Authentication", and under "Settings", specify the username and password from the "SMS Users" list.

In Outlook, when you have multiple accounts configured, there is a drop down "From" list when you send a message. When you set your "From" to the account that is using the MMSC for outbound e-mail, you can address messages to phonenumber@mms.domain.name to send out MMS messages.

Thanks for the response, Bryce. It seems a bit complicated, but it may be more clear after setting it up and trying it.

Would it be easier to have some kind of mailserver/gateway between the users and the MMS gateway...? Thinking of avoiding a special setup for Outlook.

What kind of graphic formats are supported ?

Olaf,

The issue is that you want to have some security and limits on who is able to send messages. A gateway or mail server isn't going to include an "AUTH" header to login.

That said, if people in an office only need to send to a pre-defined set of people, those addresses could be defined on the gateway and people could send to just those addresses without auth.

For graphic formats, you're generally ok with JPG, GIF, PNG and BMP ... and we'll convert if necessary. To do it without conversion, JPG seems to be the most universal of the MMS image formats at present.
