They are different MMS related protocols.

Please refer to the 3GPP TS 23.140 specification for more information (sorry, I don't have a direct link off the top of my head, but the web site is http://www.3gpp.org).

For a real quick definition ...

MM1 - This is the protocol for phone to MMSC communication. It defines how phones send and receive MMS messages through an MMSC.

MM2 - Not fully defined at present, possibly a future MMS relay protocol.

MM3 - Connections between an MMSC and an external legacy messaging system (not fully defined at present).

MM4 - MMS interworking between multiple MMSCs. (SMTP based protocol)

MM5 - MMSC interfaces with the HLR (Home Location Register) - not fully defined.

MM6 - MMSC interfaces with a user database (not defined).

MM7 - MMSC interfaces with Value Added Services (content providers). XML/SOAP based interface over HTTP POST.

MM8 - Inteface between MMSC and billing system (not defined).

In sending MMS, you usually use the interface that best fits your requirements.
