First, it has been a pleasure using NowSMS this past year. We are doing unbelieveable security projects around the world - simply because of NowSMS capabilities.
QUESTION - we would like to send a small barcode to a cell phone in a GSM country, using SMS. SMS is not our choice, but a requirement from the government (my guess, this is based on old information - but we have no way around this). Can we do this?

Hi Rick,

I don't visit this section of the forum as frequently as it is labeled "not for Now Product Support". We make it available for any who want to discuss technical issues that don't necessarily relate to NowSMS.

There are two technologies for being able to send a small bitmap using SMS technology only ... Nokia Smart Messaging and EMS.

EMS became an official part of the GSM/3GPP standards ... but it is not supported in Nokia handsets.

Meanwhile, while Nokia originally wanted to charge royalties for other handset manufacturers to implement Nokia Smart Messaging in their handsets, Nokia dropped that requirement years ago ... and many EMS compatible handsets actually do a better job receiving Nokia Smart Messaging content compared to their EMS capabilities.

The "Send EMS Picture Message" function in the NowSMS web interface actually supports both EMS and Nokia Smart Messaging. So you might want to experiment with that as a starting point to see what is possible.

The barcodes that can be supported via either Nokia Picture Messaging or EMS will be monochrome only, so it is best to restrict your images in a monochrome bitmap format.
