I have some questions that may be simple, but are important...

I want to use Now SMS/MMS to set up an SMS application/service. What exactly do I need to send an SMS message? I know I'll need a GSM modem or two to send/recieve messages, the gateway software and a server/connection. What else? Do I need an account with an SMS gateway service, or do the GSM modem's take care of that? I'm guessing I'm going to need an account that allows me to send SMS messages via a standard wireless provider to go along with the modems...This is where I get confused. Where is the "routing table" per se, or the information that maps a phone number to a server?

Also, if I have a GSM modem, does mean I can only send messages to GSM compatible phones? What will I need to be able to send to CDMA, TDMA or PCS phones? Or is this an irrelevant distinction? I just need to be able to send SMS messages reliably to the major networks.

It really depends on your needs ... and the volume of messages that you will be sending.

When you send an SMS message through a GSM modem connection, the operator whose SIM card is in the modem will charge you per message.

Basically, you'd want to look at those costs, and compare them against service provider options for the volume of messages that you are sending.

As for routing messages to other networks, generally you are going to be relying on the provider (or operator to which the SIM card in the GSM modem is subscribed) having SMS interoperability to the other carriers to which you need to send.

If you're routing to multiple countries, you might route different countries through different providers, or maybe some specific prefixes via different providers, but generally you're relying on the connection having good interoperability.

Geoff,

This depends on your phone. You should consult documentation for your mobile phone.

In general, phones have different modes of input that you can switch between:

1.) T9 mode, where the phone guesses which character you mean to input when you press a numeric key based upon a dictionary lookup.

2.) Alpha "tap" mode where you press a numeric key repeatedly to switch between different characters associated with that numeric key.

3.) Numeric mode where the characters are input directly as numbers.

There is usually a menu or options key that allows you to switch between different modes that are supported by the phone.

To give you a short answer, however, for your question, it is custom that you press and hold the key for a couple of seconds to input a numeric value when in T9 mode.
