Hi,
I've got a problem. Would like to have a private MMS service, but don't want for friends to reconfigure their phones to use my wap gateway... I would like to send MMS messages to them, and for them to download these message without having to change their operator's WAP Gateway.
Is there a way to do this? Is there a way to send an M-Notification.ind specifying another wap gateway to be used? Or, other solutions?

Thanks very much,

To a WAP gateway, an MMSC is just another content server. As long as the WAP gateway supports segmentation and re-assembly (SAR), which is required for transmitting larger pieces of content, then it is fine for MMS.

The issue is whether or not the WAP gateway has any firewall restrictions that limit what content servers it can connect to.

The general purpose WAP gateways at mobile operators (the ones that you connect to with a WAP browser), generally don't have any of these types of firewall restrictions. Sometimes the gateways have limitations that they will only connect to content servers on port 80, but other than that, they will generally let you connect to any content server.

Where you run into problems, however, is not at the WAP gateway level. It is at the GPRS APN level.

Many mobile operators pre-configure the MMS client in their mobile phones to connect to a special GPRS APN which only allows connections to a special WAP gateway at the operator (separate from the WAP gateway that is normally used for WAP browser traffic) which only allows connections to the operator MMSC.

In this instance, MMS messages from external MMSCs are effectively "blocked".

There is no way to include alternate connection settings in an MMS notification message (you would need to specify not just a WAP Gateway IP, but also a GPRS APN if you wanted to do this, and possibly other connection parameters as well).

Unfortunately, the only alternatives are ...

1.) Changing the settings on the mobile phone.

2.) Using an alternative to MMS for rich content, such as NowSMS's Multimedia WAP Push.

3.) Sending MMS messages via the operator MMSC. (http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Connecting_to_operator_MMSC.htm)
