Its running on default smpp port, we didn't assign any port, after activation I am getting the ERROR:SMPP port already in use

How can I check default smpp port?

Can I uninstall now sms lite and reinstall back? Doing so, will it ask new activation code?

Appreciate your kind help and support.

Note: We are not running any other application except NOW SMS Lite.

Thank you

Hi Mirza,

SMPP is not enabled by default.

The only way that I could see this error occurring would be if you checked the setting to enable SMPP server and actually typed in a port number.

It is not necessary to uninstall and re-install NowSMS Lite. (If you choose to do that, it will not be a problem with any activation codes.)

To fix the problem, go to the "Server" page of the NowSMS Lite configuration screen. Uncheck the checkbox next to "SMPP: Enable".

Hi Mirza,

Did you have a follow-up question?

It looks like you posted a reply via e-mail, and it came through as blank.

Hi,

You said that SMPP port is not enable by default,

We never check/enable SMPP at Server Page of NOW SMS Lite.

But still getting the same error:

Error: SMPP port already in use

There was no issue, when we were using the trial version. Though I have uninstalled and reinstalled back NOWSMS Lite, but the problem still persist.

Attache is the screen shot of Status & Server page for you kind reference.

Hi Mirza,

That is very strange.

The SMPP server should not be started unless the configuration shows it enabled, with a port number.

We have had a few situations where people have had multiple copies of the SMSGW.INI configuration file on their system.

Try right-clicking to launch the NowSMS Lite configuration program with administrative rights, and see if the configuration information it is displayed is any different.

Also, scan the hard drive for other SMSGW.INI files.

The NowSMS server reads SMSGW.INI from the ProgramData\NowSMS directory.

However, in some cases, Windows redirects the configuration program to store the file in the Users\useracount\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ProgramData\NowSMS directory.

We had a problem with the initial release of NowSMS Lite where it did not always set the file rights correctly for SMSGW.INI, which would lead to this problem. It is possible that if you installed the original release of NowSMS Lite, and the de-installed it, this "VirtualStore" copy of SMSGW.INI got left behind.

Hi Des,

Actually we use administrative login to run NowSMS Lite. Upon search I found there is only one file SMSGW.INI and located at:ProgramData\NowSMS directory

Attached is text of SMSGW.INI file <<SMSGW.INI.txt>>

Problem still persist. Its really annoying

Please help us to resolve the problem.

Appreciate your quick response.

Thank you

Hi Mirza,

Can you look at the Windows event log? The event log button in NowSMS Lite is fine for this.

Stop the NowSMS service, then restart it.

What event log entries do you see added?

Do you see anything like this?

"SMPP server not started, unable to allocate port xxx"

I'd also like to see an SMSDEBUG.LOG after a service restart to see if that provides any clues.

The SMPP server is only started if there is an SMPPPort=xxxx entry in SMSGW.INI. So, I am having difficulty determining any other reason why NowSMS would be trying to start it.

Hi Des,

I had a similar problem with the software, in the event journal I saw the error:

NowSMS Error Report. Now SMS/MMS Gateway v2009.09.16 service unable to allocate port 25 for SMTP server.

Now as far as I understand, the lite version doesn't support SMTP but it's still trying to use the port.

Just to confirm - the error I get in the software is that SMPP is unable to get a port.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for bringing that to our attention ... that is very interesting.

NowSMS Lite does not support SMTP, however it does seem to still be trying to listen for SMTP connections.

And if it can't open port 25, it displays an error about SMPP.

I'm putting in an engineering report to get this fixed, and I'll post a follow-up when it is resolved. (We need to post an update to address some other issues, so hopefully this will be soon.)

It does not appear that there is any side effect to this error. The SMPP port still works properly if SMPP is enabled ... it appears to just be an error flag that is set incorrectly, and the error should not be impacting any other functionality.

Hi Leandro,

Are you getting an error message that says "SMPP port already in use" or "Web port already in use"?

Are you using NowSMS or NowSMS Lite?

What version number does NowSMS report?

The simple answer is that in most cases another application is already using the port that NowSMS is configured to use, and you need to choose a different port number for NowSMS to use.

However, this particular thread that you posted in refers to a bug in an older version of NowSMS Lite where "SMPP port already in use" was displayed, but this was an incorrect error message.

If you are seeing "Web port already in use", change the "Port number for web interface" on the "Web" page of the NowSMS configuration. (Or the "Web port interface number" setting in NowSMS Lite.)

Also, note that if you are using NowSMS (not NowSMS Lite), there are two places in the NowSMS configuration where a web or HTTP port number is asked for. These two port numbers cannot be the same in both places, otherwise there will be a conflict.

If this does not resolve your problem, please reply back with the information that I requested.
