Hi,

We'd recommend using http://193.113.200.195:8080 as the gateway address.

Could we see the MMSCDEBUG.LOG? (The log entries from MMSC-yyyymmdd.LOG would also be helpful so we can see what error code is being returned.)

Also verify the SIM can send/receive MMS by trying it in a phone.

It wont let me send MMSCDEBUG I will email over.

It is now saying it is sending and receiving SMS and says it is sending MMS but cant seem to receive. The SMS in count doesn't increase.

Hi Andrew,

Apologies again for the delay in response.

Modem issues where everything works except receiving MMS are often mysteries to us. The MMS delivery process needs to be initiated by the network. The trigger for MMS delivery is a specially formatted SMS, usually 2 of them (known as an MMS Notification). Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done from the client side to trigger the network operator side.

Because you indicate that the SMS Received counter does not increment when an MMS is sent to the modem, this makes me assume the MMS notification is not being received. (I assume that the SMS Received counter does increment for regular SMS.)

Usually, when this doesn't happen, it is one of the following problems:

1.) SIM card not provisioned for MMS. To test this issue, move the SIM card from the modem to a phone and verify that the phone is able to send and receive MMS when using the SIM.

2.) The modem intercepts MMS notifications and does not forward over modem interface. This happens most frequently with phones that are used as modems, MMS notifications are a type of WAP Push and the phone software intercepts and treats in a special way. Dedicated modem devices do not have software to process WAP Push or MMS notifications.

3.) The modem has an issue with binary SMS or multipart long SMS. This is rare, but has been observed on a few off modems. The test here is to try to send a binary SMS to the modem and see if it is received. Try using NowSMS to have the modem send a WAP Push message to itself. Is it received? Since some networks block mobile originated WAP Push, another good test is a plain binary SMS ... in NowSMS, go to Binary SMS ... select type "Other" ... put the modem phone number in the "To" field, try Binary Data = 0102030405060708 and DCS = 4. Is that message sent and received?

Further to #3, a number of years ago, I do recall a modem that could only receive binary SMS if the receive SMS Storage setting in NowSMS was "Direct to Modem", so that is also worth trying.

4.) Mysterious cases. Most notably in Canada on the Rogers network, the network does not like to send MMS notifications to some modem/SIM combinations for no known reason.

I understand you've tried 2 different modems and 2 different networks (T-Mobile UK and GiffGaff) with no success.

Normally in this case, since you're in the UK, I'd stick a GiffGaff SIM into a modem and run some tests, just to confirm there is not a general problem on that network since most of our customers are more interested in sending/receiving SMS, but when using MMS, only send.

However, I am working out of the US at present, so I've been trying to coordinate with colleagues in the UK with little luck. One does have a GiffGaff SIM, but he's on vacation this week. So I have been told to wait until Monday or Tuesday when they are back in the office.

In the meantime, can you try the tests I mentioned in #3? Also, having changed the SMS receive storage option to Direct, can you collect an SMSDEBUG.LOG after having sent in both an SMS and MMS to the modem. Perhaps that will show something unexpected.

Cheers,
