Hi,

Generally speaking, Nokia phones are good for sending, they just can't support receiving messages.

And generally speaking, no phone will allow you to receive MMS messages via the GSM modem interface. The MMS client in the device always gets in the way, and the MMS message never gets forwarded to the GSM modem interface. So when I mention the Nokia phones, they are good for sending SMS and MMS, but they can't receive SMS or MMS via the modem interface.

SonyEricsson phones are better about actually allowing SMS messages to be received over the GSM modem interface (avoid the P series with UIQ/Symbian and the X series with Windows Mobile). But the MMS client will not allow you to receive MMS messages over the modem interface.

To both send and receive MMS messages, you need a dedicated modem device. We've had good success with iTegno and Option 3G modems. Sierra Wireless 3G modems will also work but are a pain to configure.

Hi Dragon,

You're right ... iTegno doesn't have a 3G modem ... only GPRS/EDGE. For some reason, I thought they had a 3G model now.

Option has quite a few models with 3G support. They used to go by the sub-brand "GlobeTrotter", but now they seem to be calling them "ICON".

Option sells quite a few of these modems through OEM agreements with mobile operators where the modems are re-branded with the operator logo. Those are generally ok ... the only thing you have to watch out for is that if you buy it with a contract, some operators will enable the SIM only for internet data, and you might not have SMS or MMS support provisioned on the mobile operator. It's best to use an unlocked modem with a SIM that you know has SMS and MMS support properly provisioned.

Speaking of OEM branded modems that work well, we also tested out a Huawei 3G modem that came with a T-Mobile UK web'n'walk account.

Between Option and Huawei, you'll find a lot of USB 3G modem choices.

Thanks Des

I found the following ICON 3G modems. My concern is that it does specify support for MMS.

http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/1727/option-icon-401-usb-hsdpa-wireless-mod em
This would be ideal

http://www.sierraindonesia.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=13

Would appreciate you feedback

I also have several Samsung 3G phones - i780, u700 and a HTC Touch Dual which I can hook up to my PC via USB. Can I configure to work with NowSMS, if so how?

Many Thanks, Dragon

Hi Dragon,

I don't have as much concern with the MMS side. The modem doesn't need to specifically support MMS. Sending MMS happens completely over a packet network connection. So if the modem can support data connectivity, that's generally enough.

The trickier part is receiving MMS, which requires binary SMS support.

The spec sheet looks like all the commands are covered. And, I've seen a lot of the GlobeTrotter models from this manufacturer used successfully in the past.

I've got an ICON 322 on order, which I should have tomorrow, and I plan to run some tests on it.

I'm not having any luck connecting to the other web site, so I'm not sure if that is referencing the same modem or a different one.

Regarding the phones ... the HTC Touch is out, as basically, none of the Windows Mobile phones implement these commands.

You could try the Samsung phones by connecting them to your computer via USB. Some Samsung models work, some don't. All you can do is install the drivers, and then try adding the modem to NowSMS. I haven't had a lot of experience with Samsung phones have modems ... the feedback that I've seen is that some will work, others won't.

I'll post some notes on the ICON 322 after it shows up.
