Hi, The short answer is No. SMS over GPRS does not bypass the operator SMSC. When it is supported by the mobile operator, it happens over GPRS at a lower level than TCP/IP data. It gets charged as SMS, not as GPRS data. When we talk about SMS over GPRS in these forums, the reason for the interest is increased speed in sending SMS, not a cost issue. -- Des NowSMS Support

It depends on many factors ... the modem being used ... mobile operator ... signal strength at the modem location. Of the modems that we've reviewed recently (http://blog.nowsms.com/search/label/GSM%20modem), the Option modems have had a slight performance edge, and in many environments a single one of those modems can get close to 30 messages per minute over standard circuit switched SMS. But performance can vary widely between different mobile operators and your signal strength. -- Des NowSMS Support

I don't keep track of this type of information. (In the past, it has even varied with the same operator in different cities.) All you can do is try. Keep in mind that SMS over GPRS is not a way to send SMS messages without being charged for it. SMS over GPRS still goes through the operator SMSC, and gets charged as an SMS. The reason that SMS over GPRS is desirable, and that we discuss it here, is because it offers significant performance benefits with regard to the speed of sending out messages. -- Des NowSMS Support
