We are using Globe Trotter Icon322 (andusing the Globe Trotter ICON322 - Modem interface)
we purchase the unlocked version of this modem... The software automaticall installed for AT&T, but the driver names / connection is called - GlobeTrotter Icon322 - modem interface

We are on Tmoblie, using your default settings.

settings used:
server - http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
wap IP- 216.155.165.50
APN- wap.voicestream.com

We constantly seem to get
connection failed- ras ERROR 734
The PPP link control protocol was terminate
or
unable to connect to wap gateway

Every once in a blue moon will I be able to run an MMS connection test and have it go "OK". Is this something with Tmobile in the US or some other issue?

Hi Brian,

Most likely, this sounds like a signal strength issue.

You might resolve the "unable to connect to wap gateway" issue by changing to use a WAP Gateway IP address setting of http://216.155.165.50:8080 (include the http:// prefix, as this signals to use a WAP2/HTTP proxy instead of a WAP/WSP proxy).

The other error about the PPP link control protocol being terminated basically means that the GPRS/EDGE link is failing. You might have good enough signal strength for SMS, which is not bandwidth intensive, but marginal for GPRS/EDGE.

Enable the SMSDEBUG.LOG and restart the NowSMS service.

As part of the modem initialisation process, NowSMS sends the AT+CSQ command, which reports back the modem signal strength. You'll see something like this in the SMSDEBUG.LOG:

17:56:07:882 [3] ThreadProcessModem: AT+CSQ
17:56:07:960 [3] ThreadProcessModem:
+CSQ: 18,99

The first number after the +CSQ: is the one that reports the signal strength.

In the past I've noticed that in my home study (where cellular signal is noticeably weak), I usually get a value of 10-12, and about 50% of my MMS connections fail. I don't see any problems with SMS.

By contrast, in the office, I get a value in the mid-20s, and don't have any problems using the same modem that has a 50% failure rate at home.

Try several restarts of the NowSMS service and note the AT+CSQ value that you are seeing. If you are seeing sub-20 values, see if you can relocate/reposition the PC with the modem in order to get a higher value.

this definantly appears to be the case. Running directly (using AT+CSQ, I'm only at a arround an 8-10. I'm guessing due to this I'm going to encounter a high failure rate on MMS.

I know this is probably out of your expertise, but we bought a repeater (stuck antena on the roof) and repeated signal internally. It appears that +CSQ: 30,99 , so a strong connection, but it fails every time. Any thoughts on why a repeater might cause a 100% failure rate with a better signal?

Hi Brian,

In the past, I have made use of modems with external antennas ... but I don't have any experience with repeaters.

What little I've been able to read does claim that they should work.

Can you try with some phones and see if they have issues. Especially I'd recommend taking the SIM card from the modem and put it into a phone to try sending/receiving MMS when you know that you're connected through the repeater.

If the phone seems to work OK, then I suppose it is possible that the modem could be confused. You could try editing SMSGW.INI, and under the [Modem - driver name of your modem] section header, add these settings:

CommandPostInit1=AT+CGDCONT=1
CommandPostInit2=AT+CGDCONT=2
CommandPostInit3=AT+CGDCONT=3
CommandPostInit4=AT+CGDCONT=4

These settings delete saved APN settings on the modem each time NowSMS initialises the modem, which results in NowSMS reprovisioning the APN settings before each MMS connection.

There is no reason why this should be necessary or recommended, but I have seen this make a difference in the past.

It appeared that the first signal booster was failing to stream the data range of the signal and only was boosting the voice. This was causing the data to fail constantly. We are now up and running at a +19-+25 CSQ

If anyone tries this in the future, be sure to purchase a signal amp that clearly states it boosts data as well as voice
