Hi Mark,

There's nothing special about MMS to a Nokia 6600.

But there is something different about how the Nokia 6600 (and many other recent Nokia phone models) make their network connection. The Nokia 6600 uses an HTTP instead of the low level WAP protocols. So it requires different WAP/HTTP proxy settings.

What mobile operator are you connected to?

How are you sending the messages through NowSMS (NowSMS as direct MMSC, or over GPRS modem to the operator MMSC)?

What are the configured settings in the phone? (On the 6600, go into Messaging/Options/Settings/Multimedia Message/Options/Edit in order to see the MMS settings.)

Hi Bryce,
thanks again for ur reply. Well, im sending MMS from Web-Interface as well as my Java Application.I tried with Maxis and Digi Operators in malaysia.I believe we have NowSMS as GPRS modem as it was already set up.Its currently connected to Phone Modem so i guess its connected to operator MMSC. Is there any way to know if its a direct MMSC or connected to operator MMSC.
thanks,
mark

Hi Bryce,

I am experiencing a similar problem. I have configured NowSMS to send MMS messages using a GPRS modem. I am using the Ericsson T610 phone as the modem and T-Mobile in the US is my service provider. I am trying to send the message to the Nokia 6620 phone with AT&T Wireless. I get the MMS notification, but not the content. I looked at the MMSCDebug.log and the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG files, but could not figure out what was going on.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Mark,

Sorry, I should have provided you with more details in my previous reply. Please see http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm for a description of the "direct delivery MMSC" and "operator MMSC connection" differences.

Basically, if you are going through the operator MMSC, then you have an external MMSC connection defined in the "MMSC Routing" page of the NowSMS configuration.

Getting back to your original issue ... my first question would be whether you are able to send any MMS messages from other phones to the Nokia 6600. Is it possible that the settings are not configured on the phone?

The one different issue with the Nokia 6600 is that it uses a different type of WAP proxy (so it would use different proxy settings than the SE K700i, although the K700i has ability to use both types of proxies, it performs better with the old WAP style proxy so that is probably what it is using). I'm wondering if perhaps the phone is just not configured with the settings?

Hi Ashwin,

One of the problems in the US is a lack of binary SMS interoperability between the carriers.

So using a modem on T-Mobile, I didn't think you could even get the MMS notification across to an ATTWS subscriber ... unless something has changed recently.

Are you able to send a WAP Push message through NowSMS with the T-Mobile SIM to the ATTWS phone?

If you are, then that is good news. I was not aware that this was possible (as it wasn't the last time we were able to test this).

But even if the WAP Push works, I have heard that the ATTWS MMS settings are closed, meaning that they do not allow MMS messages from external MMSCs to be received. (See http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm for more of a description on this.)

Now as I ramble a bit more, ATTWS does currently have MMS interoperability with T-Mobile and Cingular. So if you configure NowSMS to send messages through the operator MMSC, the T-Mobile SIM can send to an ATTWS subscriber through the T-Mobile MMSC. (Again, some good pointers in the link above.) But this is more expensive.

And at present, it appears that ATTWS can send/receive MMS with T-Mobile and Cingular subscribers. However, T-Mobile and Cingular do not have interoperability with each other, only with ATTWS. So using an ATTWS SIM in the modem would appear to have more reach if you are routing through an operator MMSC.

Anonymous,

This is a support forum for the Now SMS/MMS Gateway product. Our priority in responding to questions is to respond to messages pertaining to technical support for our product.

But to quickly answer your question, without WAP (or internet) connection, you are out of luck. You can receive mono ringtones and black and white pictures that were sent in the Nokia Smart Messaging format, but that's about it.

Hi,
I have a nokia 6620 with Cingular. I have been able to send MMS to other Cingular/Nokia phones but have had no lucking getting to T-mobile or anyone else. If I use the app on the phone, I am able to forward a multi-media message to a T-mobile account. So far, I have been unable to get the "use carrier MMSC" to work but presumably it would fix the problem ( it should work as well as the app on the phone).

Given that my access point on the phone is right, what should I suspect or check in the nowMMS settings? Im really at a loss on diagnosis here. I have used the phone on a debian system and tried to manually contact the mmsc but the diagnostics are not too helpful- the likely mmsc ports are open but they just time out.
Thanks.

Hi,

Using http://www.nowsms.com/howmmsworks.htm as a reference point, if you are attempting MMS direct delivery (NowSMS as the MMSC), which is the default mode, then this is likely not to work.

I believe both T-Mobile and Cingular in the US operate open MMSCs (unlike many other parts of the world), but there is not binary SMS interoperability between these two GSM operators (unlike most of the rest of the world). So you cannot send an MMS notification through a GSM modem to a subscriber of a different mobile operator network in the US. That is why you are not able to get the MMS message through, it is because the MMS notification over SMS is a binary SMS message, and that cannot be routed between the two operators.

There are independent SMS providers that can handle binary SMS message delivery into Cingular and T-Mobile. But that pretty much only covers Cingular and T-Mobile, as the only major GSM carriers in the US. The binary message formats are different for CDMA operators, such as Verizon and Sprint (and you can't find an independent SMS provider that supports binary SMS delivery into these CDMA operators anyway).

So what you want to do is route messages through an operator MMSC. Cingular has MMS interoperability with T-Mobile (and also with Sprint and Verizon, I believe), so you can submit an MMS message into the Cingular MMSC, and get it routed to any of those different operators.

The process of setting up an operator MMSC connection on a GPRS modem is described here:

http://www.nowsms.com/documentation/ProductDocumentation/mms_notifications_and_c ontent/Connecting_to_operator_MMSC.htm

And you can find the Cingular specific settings here:

No problem. I'm dropping everything else immediately to tell you ... that I'm sorry, but I don't think I can help you.

NowSMS is not a bulk SMS or MMS service provider. And NowSMS is not a replacement for a bulk SMS or MMS service provider. You need a connection to an SMS service provider, or a GSM modem, before you can send any messages with NowSMS.

You can find out more information about NowSMS here:

http://www.nowsms.com/whatisnowsms.htm

But if you're looking for an SMS service provider, I don't have any recommendations because it depends where in the world you are, and what your messaging needs are. You can, however, find some general information at the above link.
