I'm having some issues actually 'recieving' MMS messages. Instead of download / processing an MMS, it is being recieved / process in the SMS-IN directory. Here is a sample SMS IN:

[SMS-IN]
ModemName=GlobeTrotter Icon322 - Modem Interface #5
Sender=202
PhoneNumber=1623455xxxx
UDH=0B05040B8423F00003750202
dcs=F5
Data=810303F48083687474703A2F2F31302E3137362E33332E3138372F6D6D732F776170656E633 F6C6F636174696F6E3D31363233343535323933335F3173706E6336267269643D31313200
Binary=1
ReceivedSMSC=+12063130028

Is there a setting somewhere I'm neglecting? The system is easily able to contact to send an MMS, however, when recieving an MMS, its recieving it as one or more SMS messages.

Thoughts?

after further review: we are running MM1 (for sending and recieving) VIA GPRS on Tmobile USA.

We can send MMS and recieve SMS perfectly fine, however, as stated above, we're not retrieving the MMS properly

We are using your recomended ICON modem. I also read elsewhere that setting the MMSC up to port 80 is needed for Tmobile USA, and I have done this as well.

If you need any other information or logs etc, please let me know. This is one of our last hurdles to get this thing up and running.

Thank you,

Hi Brian,

That looks like a standard MMS notification message.

Have you configured the MMS receive settings? They are defined separately from the MMS sending settings, and are associated with the modem definition: http://www.nowsms.com/doc/mmsc-messaging-server/connecting-to-an-operator-mmsc/u sing-a-gprs-modem

yeah I've read tyhrough that article as well... And yes, it is configured in the modem definitions (you can check my image in the other thread under the SMSC is configured).

I can get you screenshots of the exact configuration if needed.

All modems are configured, and pass the 'test connection'

Here is screenshot of configuration:

What is the file name of these filed in SMS-IN? Do they have a .SAR extension? MMS notifications are usually multipart, and I am suspecting you are only receiving one part.

This happens with some modem/operator configurations. Changing "SMS Message Storage" to "Direct to Modem" often solves this.

If it does not, I would like to see more files, and their file names.

Des,

They do not have a .sar extension. I am recieving a multipart. I did change this to direct to modem. I will attach a few of the files they are in multiparts.

If need be, I can supply remote access to our server if this would be easier for you guys to look directly. At this point we would just like to get your product up and runnning ASAP. Please feel free to contact me at my email I signed up for.

I have attached a few of the files for you. if you need any other information such as settings, etc please let me know.

Also, we have confirmed these sims are capable of recieving MMS messages (we tested all sims on motoroal razor) and it was capable of download the MMS messages automatically. Image of 'in sms box'

I won't be able to do a full diagnosis until morning, but the fact that these files have a .IN extension is telling me something.

Go to the 2-way page and enable the setting to process received SMS messages. I think this will start the messages flowing properly.

I did that. You were correct that it was not on to process recieved SMS. However, after checking this box, and selecting recieve MMS to (C:\pr...\nowsms\mms-in

It still doesn't appear to be working. They are no longer .in files but are SMS files, but they still contain the same information that the .in files above contained.

Try a new MMS message, just in case those notifications are expired.

Also double check that you have the same receive MMS settings defined for each modem.

I'm going to ask Bryce to look at this in the morning as there is something I am missing.

Can you post SMSGW.INI also.

Hi Brian,

We can recreate this problem with your message files and settings.

There is a definite problem in the 2010.11.04 release, as we cannot recreate the problem in earlier releases. I am investigating making the previous release available for download, or getting an update posted to fix this issue.

I'll post more information in the next several hours.

Follow-up.

I've posted an update that will resolve this particular issue to http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20101214.zip.

Alternatively, the main release from earlier this year, which does not have this problem is at http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms201002-install.zip.

An additional Follow-up. One of the DLLs in the update mentioned above was not updated properly for the install. This resulted in unnecessary retries for some SMPP configurations.

The link above has been replaced with an updated version of the install and should now identify itself as version 2010.12.15.

If you previously downloaded from this link, it has been replaced with http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20101215.zip

I am using NOWSMS Gateway software in which I am unable to retrieve MMS messages..According to my settings, the received MMS messages will be saved to MMS-IN folder created by the software itself..But it ain't happening.

Apart from retrieving MMS messages I am able to sent SMS/MMS through the Web Interface and can also receive SMS..

I am using an Airtel 3g EDGE GSM Modem MF180 and an Airtel SIM which is connected to my PC..

I am hereby attaching a word document in which I have taken the snapshots of all the settings that I have done in the NOWSMS Gateway Software..

Kindly send in some solutions asap!!

Thanks..

Hi Abishek,

You should try the update that is referenced on this discussion thread that you joined.

http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20101215.zip

There is a problem receiving MMS messages via a modem connection for many configurations in the 2010.11.04 release. The update referenced above resolves this. I would start with that as a most likely solution.

Initially I wasn't even able to receive sms because at that time I was using mobile phone instead of an external modem..So usually Mobile phone intercepts the message on its device rather than to display it on the nowsms gateway..

But later i purchased Airtel 3g usb gsm modem mf180..Through which i was able to receive sms in the gateway..But MMS receiving problem still persist..

Kindly provide me with some useful solutions asap..

Thanks...

Is it because am using nowsms gateway trial version for 60 days?? Is there any kind of limitations that in trial version one can't be able to receive MMS messages in the gateway??

Move the SIM card from the modem to a phone and verify the phone can receive MMS with that SIM (rule out SIM as an issue).

Next a question, when you send an MMS to the modem, does the modem show any received SMS (binary)?

Hmm ...

Unfortunately I do not see any settings that would have any effect on your situation.

The MMS delivery process is triggered by receipt of a special binary SMS message (called an "MMS Notification"). This SMS message provides the device with details of an MMS message to be received.

If the modem isn't receiving this SMS message, there is no way to complete the MMS receiving process.

If the SIM can receive MMS OK when used in a phone, and if NowSMS can receive normal SMS messages OK, I don't know what else to try. Either something on the network is stopping the "MMS Notification" messages from being sent or delivered to the modem ... or the modem cannot handle these binary messages.

Is NowSMS definitely able to receive normal text SMS messages?

Des,

I was able to reproduce this problem with v2010.02.09. My incoming MMS was working for years prior with older NowSMS releases. I was forced to install the v2010.02.09 version because of server hardware replacement, and then my incoming MMS stopped. It shows up in the SMS-IN folder.

I will try the version specified in the email and report my findings.

I just finished the upgrade to the patched v2010.12.15 version; same results. I am running Microsoft Server 2003RC2(4G RAM), dedicated to just NowSMS - usb Multitech GSM Modem(same modem with respect to my older system).

In an effort to speed this up, I am offering VNC access to system over the internet. Debug logs are enabled, but do not appear to show activity when the incoming MMS drops into the SMS-IN folder. I still have the original nowsms2009rc.zip file, which I am prepared to downgrade the current v2010.12.15 release.

My older release of NowSMS was v2009.04.03, that did not have this problem.

Same results .Screen Capture

Hi Frank,

I'm not sure your problem is related to the others. The first issue (Brian) is a problem related to the 2010.11.04 release. Inbound MMS messages are not processed and instead files with a ".IN" or ".SMS" extension accumulate in the SMS-IN directory. That was a bug specific to the 2010.11.04 release.

The second issue (abishek) is a problem with a provider that refuses to send MMS notification messages to the modem.

In your case, you are seeing only part 2 of a 2-part notification message. That is why the file in the SMS-IN directory has a .SAR extension. NowSMS is waiting for the first part to arrive so that it can decode and process the message.

This problem does happen with some frequency on some modems.

As best as we've been able to determine, the problem is with the modem dropping messages if they are received too quickly in succession. (For MMS notifications, the mobile operator will usually resend them after some period of time if the message isn't picked up. But frequently, affected modems will only see one part of the retry notification as well.)

Changing the "SMS Message Storage" option usually works around this problem. I believe it is the "Direct to Modem" setting that usually works best. (Although I seem to recall one modem that worked better using "SIM" storage.)

That said, I would be very curious if an older version of NowSMS behaved differently. So if you want to try that before changing this setting, I'd welcome that input.

Des,

If I send a plain MMS with just text "Hello", it shows up as xxxxxx.in - as you indicated.

I'll try the older software. Does the installation key stay the same? I purchase update agreement and don't want issues relicensing 60msg/min machine. Already had to once, when my first windows machine hardware died.

Do I get a refund on update agreement if the older software is proven working? just kidding....

Also, what "modem" does NowSMS recommend these days? What is the modem of choice in your lab? I'm looking for dedicated modem with performance and great stability, not a cellphone with usb cable. Back when, I think Multitech was the recommended.

Frank,

If MMS messages are stuck in the SMS-IN queue with a ".IN" extension, make sure that "Process Received SMS Messages" is checked on the 2-way page. (If they are not related to MMS, the ".IN" extension will change to ".SMS")

To change versions, there is no need to uninstall, so it won't effect the serialization. (If for some unexpected reason it does, just apply the serial number again. It will not change the reference code.)

We've been happiest with the Option ICON family of modems, although we have yet to test the 5xx series yet. Beware that if you use T-Mobile USA, you should avoid any modems that support the T-Mobile 3G AWS (1700Mhz) band. Our experience has shown that T-Mobile assumes these devices are being used for internet access only, and MMS access appears to be blocked.
