Hello, have downloaded and installed the lastest version of NOW SMS & MMS Gateway. Using it for a test of recieving MMS messages and transform them to an email and then to be delivered to users.

I'm using a Cinterion TC35i GSM/GPRS modem which is installed as a Standard 33600 Modem on COM1.

My problem is that the modem doesn't respond to any GPRS commands and when trying to send MMS I get "Network Connection failed, RAS Error 777". Also when I'm doing the test under modem connection and MMS Settings I get "Warning: Modem not responding to GPRS commands. Testing will continue." and then "Connection failed - Ras Error 777" again.

I use the same simcard in my phone and there I can send and recieve MMS messages..

Have tried to put an extra initalization command as "AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET.TELE2.se" but it doesn't make any difference..

Anyone out there that have an idea what I can try to get this to work..

Thanks...

Hi Henrik,

Let's take a look at the MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG (even if not explicitly enabled, it is temporarily enabled when you do a connection test). It sounds like the AT+CGDCONT command is failing. I'd like to see the responses that are logged to this debug log that are causing NowSMSto log this error.

Hmm...

That modem does not seem to have any GPRS/packet data support, as that command is fundamental. Is it possible that you have an internal modem and the driver is pointing to it instead of the GSM modem?

Does the modem work for SMS?

Thanks for your help..

Hi Henrik,

I am very surprised that this modem would not have data support. The Cinterion brand name for what used to be a division on Siemens is relatively new, so it is not like the modem is old. Unfortunately I can't think of any way to support data without being able to specify the APN name for a connection.

Hello again Des,

Thanks for the information, it's seems like you are right about the modem doesn't support GPRS and I guess I need to buy another GSM/GPRS modem.

What manufacture/product/models do NOWSMS recommend for using with sms and mms?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Henrik,

Sorry for the delay in response. I've generally been happy with USB modems from Option. Here are a few models that we've looked more closely at in recent years: http://www.nowsms.com/tag/gsm-modem

Hello again,

According to our supplier the Option modem's in your list is no longer avalible from manufacture so I wonder what you think about the below GSM/GPRS modems.

Option Icon 505 USB 14.4 HSPA+
or
Sierra Wireless Compass 889 HSUPA USB

Thanks for your help

Hi Henrik,

Modem model numbers are a moving target.

We've tried a variety of 4xx, 3xx and 2xx series Option modems, but no 5xx series models yet.

That said, the Option models have been very consistent across these versions, so I'd be confident using the 505.

Sierra Wireless models vary more between different series. The 899 should be similar to the 885, but you'll see in the article that we wrote up about the 885, you tend to have to play guessing games with COM port numbers.

I'd go with the Option Icon 505.

(And I probably need to talk to my boss about ordering a new batch of random modem models to update our list.)

Hello Des again,

After buying another GSM/GPRS modem (Option Icon 505)I can now send mms and sms messages without any problem. But recieving (I do receive sms messages perfectly) them doesn't work, it seems like NOWSMS thinks it's a sms that's arriving and it just shows up under 2-way/Process Received SMS Messages.. eventually I would like mms messages to be received and then transfered as an email.

Can you please help me with what's wrong. Have attached the log-files..
application/octet-streamSMSDEBUG.log
SMSDEBUG.LOG (33.5 k)
application/octet-streamMMSCDEBUG.log
MMSCDEBUG.LOG (12457.7 k)
application/octet-streamMMSWAPDEBUG.log
MMSWAPDEBUG.LOG (20.4 k)

Thanks

Hi Henrik,

The notifications appear to be in the correct format.

Do you have the "Receive MMS" settings configured under the modem "Properties" in the SMSC list?

If you do, and it's still not working, download this update:

http://www.nowsms.com/download/nowsms20101215.zip

There is a problem in the 2010.11.04 release in this area.
