i'm trying to send video through mms.
the video is about 25 sec long mpeg 3gp 295kbps 176x144. the problem i'm having is the quality is very poor. there is an asian website who delivers video through mms and it seems at least 640x480 and it looks good. i know there are limitations to mms video but how are they able to do it. any insights. i'm not very good at coding but how can this be done. everyone else on other forums seems to think it can't be done but the asian site is doing it. there limitations are that certain carriers have limits and the phones must have mms ability, other wise no video.

thanks

Hi Jason,

It is all very carrier specific (and, of course, device specific).

Overall message size limits are the biggest restriction. These vary by phone and occasionally by operator.

A lot of newer Android phones seem to have a limit of 1MB for MMS message size. iPhone max MMS message size seems to be either 1MB or 2MB, depending on carrier settings.

Nokia N97 limit is around 600KB. And a lot of high end phones from last year (including many Android models), had a limit of around 300KB.

With these types of constraints, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to send high quality video over MMS, except for short clips.

How long are these MMS video clips that you refer to? Are you sure they are MMS and not text messages with links to streaming video?

i believe they say if you do not have mms capabilities then you will not be able to view. with that said if you point someone to a link to a video stream will it cost those people? i think the main reason they use mms is for the target phones will not have to pay charges, unless (text charges). they are also targeting around the 25 sec mark. also, is there a code you can give the movie file so it doesn't zoom to the phones screen size. to keep it to the actual size?

Cost could be an issue.

Some providers allow free data access for sending/receiving MMS messages, and only charge per message.

Some providers charge per message, and charge for the data access for sending/receiving MMS messages.

I'm sorry, but I don't have any tips for video formatting or regarding tools for creating video content. If you want to produce video content with quality similar to this other provider, you might want to subscribe to their content in order to better analyse its format.
